Steering Damper

I took my 2018 JL in for an oil change and tire rotation. After being on the highway, going about 70mph, the steering wheel began to shake pretty violently. Had to pull over (onto a bridge) thinking they must not have tightened the lug nuts or something like that. Called the dealership to come check it out and everything was tight. They said it might be because I needed new tires (i really did) and that maybe changing one of the more worn tires to the front caused a problem. After spending the money on new tires, same thing happened. Now they are telling me it the damper. I looked online, and found where there were problems with 2018-2019 dampers and they were replaced, however, when I put in my VIN, it says I have no recalls. Any suggestions on how to get this covered. I'm looking at another big chunk of money to have that done. Thanks!

Get away from an OEM piece and buy a Fox or similar. Easy to install yourself and only takes minutes.

Just replaced my dampener. 46$ from a Jeep dealer.
It took me 10 minutes to purge it and put it on.

2018JLUR. Same symptoms as you. My tires were bad and I knew it. The dampener fixed the issue.
I have since gotten new tires as the old one’s probably took out the original dampener.
Mine was obviously bad as it was wet from leaking.

All current model Jeeps should track straight and ride smooth with NO steering stabilizer installed. The stabilizer/damper does just that, dampens any small vibration or side/side thrust. A steering stabilizer will only mask the actual problem.

I would check wheel balance first.
I would re-torque every front end bolt with the Jeep on the ground.

My real question was, if there was a recall previously on the same make and model, shouldn't I be able to argue that it should be replaced for free?

yes there is a recall tsb that called for a replacement but the replacement is trash. how many miles on the jeep? what size tires are you running? this can be a load of things. from loose/bad ball joints to under torqued drag link and tie-rod joints or bad alignment. welcome to the world of death wobble.

Problem is that you'll be back with the same issue sooner than later.
