I have the aluminum gear and I’m thinking about going steel. I have a 20 JLU 2.0 etorque. I’m finding several part numbers (68551684AE) and also I’m curious if I need the software upgrade. I’m out of warranty so I can do it myself.

what’s the correct part number and will installing without updating cause any issues?

Not sure on the part number, but I believe a reflash to the Jeep’s computer is required after you swap the part.

I’ve seen a couple posts on it floating around over the years.

They may have to flash.
Have you gone through the TSB thread ? It's massive, but there are different experiences amongst those who've had it done.

There's a chance, that they may perform the steering box TSB even outside of warranty coverage. Did you already check and they turned you down?

Had mine done under warranty, but they didn't check their work. Steering shaft coupling was not tightened completely, causing play, and the large pitman arm nut was so loose that I could turn it by hand. So, check behind them if they do it.

You could try reaching out to jeepcares. I was told there is a grace period (if you're out of warranty). I think the grace period was 24,000 miles beyond the powertrain warranty (I was past that unfortunately, lol).

I had the TSB done just before my basic warranty went out on my 2019. They had to flash.

You can replace the box without flashing anything. It does help. Did it on my '19. Plan to have the flash applied when I get the corrosion repair taken care of.

People have replaced them without doing any software. Let me know if you want a steel box for the 2 door.
