Guess he wants the headlights on 24/7. Blocking the light from hitting the photo cell would keep them on.
Manually turning the headlight dial to the “headlights on” setting would do the same thing. Set and forget - without eliminating the sensor function. I’m guessing he has a windshield sunshade, for when it’s parked?

As we at the North are accustomed to the hot radiator/water vapor steam, I am more intrigued by the statement about "sunshade to block the light sensor".
Can anyone explain this "mod" to me, please?
Maybe his wording was just odd? Think he meant that he had his sunshade up and it was blocking the sensor? Pretty sure he doesn't have a permanent 'mod' to block it right?!

I keep my headlights on "auto" and have duct tape over the sensor so my lights are always on, day or night, and I don't have to worry about them.

Why would I want the headlights on 24/7? That's not what I meant. What I meant was the sunshade that we put in when it's parked blocks the light sensor and automatically turns on the headlights since the car thinks it's dark outside.

That's exactly what I meant.

Say what you mean then…then there’s no speculation huh.

Call me old but I still do not understand your rationale. You have "the sunshade that you put in when it's parked to block the light sensor and automatically turn on the headlights since the car thinks it's dark outside". I mean, that is what your lights switch is for..., not?
If the car is parked, the light are obviously off, if the car is running/idling-stopped, the lights are on. So, if you keep the switch on "AUTO" the lights are auto-on in a darker environment (night or indoors), and if you want your lights on in the middle of the sunny day, you just flip the switch to "ON", or keep them on all the times...
Might be different for the USA models, but our Canadian models have a programmable settings to choose if you want your daylight running lights on/off automatically, too.

I thought I explained it clearly but it seems like I didn't. I described that I had the car running in order to roll down the windows to clean the tops of them. Since the sunshade is in, it's blocking the light sensor which triggered the auto headlights since the car thinks it's dark outside. I made it a point to mention since the steam that I thought was abnormal was more pronounced against the illuminated headlights.

In regards to the headlight switch, I'm one of those types who leaves it in "Auto" and never touches it again. No, it's not done out of laziness. The auto headlights exist for a reason. Just let the car do the thinking. If I don't use it, then there's no point in having that feature in the first place.

Yes, the headlight settings on U.S. models are different compared to Canadian models. If I'm not mistaken, vehicles in Canada are required to have daytime running lights whereas in the U.S., they're not. They are becoming more common but not every vehicle has them. And we certainly don't have a devoted setting to turn on or off the running lights. For us, it's just the headlights.

OK, I see, thanks...
I, as many others, also keep the switch on "auto", my daylight running lights are always on, but sometimes I switch to "ON" manually to get the full low beam and linked fog lights, if needed (i.e. driving through thick wildfire smoke - when the light is just enough to keep the sensor off, but I want the lights)

I like having the headlights on all the time for a few reasons. One is I personally prefer the look of it lit up. (Other vehicle is a Ram dually, definitely like the lit up look) Second, it annoys me insanely, I’m in Canada with the day time running lights, is that people don’t think to turn on the headlights in poor visibility situations because they think they are “on” and therefore they don’t have taillights on full time. In bad blowing snow or fog, that faint glow of a taillight in front of you could be the half second you need to avoid rear ending them in some situations when they are stopped or driving insanely too slow. Even worse is white vehicles and hide in the blowing snow.
I actually might just cover up the sensor so that they are always on when my wife drives, an “auto” person.

Your JL thinks it's a JK

That steam was a bit embarrassing when it was raining or snowing, strange it doesn't seem to happen with the JL.
