Wow talk about timing! I just got the answer today!!
My JL Sahara is at the dealer now for a couple of things to be gone over. I mentioned this to the head of the service dept and he said he knew about it. He went out to the lot and produced the same chirp/squeal on the Grand Cherokees that had the engines warm, which have the same V6 and 8 speed tranny.
He said it happens on Jeeps that have the ESS setup... i.e. the Cherokees and the JL Wranglers. Believe it or not it's not the belt or starter like most people think. It comes from somewhere in the bell housing of the tranny, or in that general vicinity.
They spoke to Chrysler HQ and they basically said it is what it is. It's inherent to the design. I wouldn't sweat it, it's either going to become a serious issue that needs to be addressed or it will just be a Jeep Thing.

BTW... he is going to show me how to shut that stupid ESS off without having it disable the automatic start or have a warning light on the dash.

Mines been making the noise since 20 miles and now I have 6000 miles and it's still making it, but less often. I'm at dealership now and apprantly they think I'm making it up. Also my rado keeps turn off and clock resetting out of nowhere. Hmmm I hate the loud noise srarting. Sometimes it is embarrassing.

Please report back on how to shut off ESS :like:

Well it turns out it's not bullet proof. There are two pins under the hood, when looking at them from the front the pin on the left (the inner pin) controls the ESS. If that pin is disconnected ESS will not come on BUT you will get a warning light.
So the guy disconnected the pin, took the pin out of the holder and connected it back up and left it lay there. Voila... no ESS and no warning... until you drive it for a bit, then it throws up a message and turns on a yellow "A" in a circle warning light. He said if you turn the Jeep off and then start it back up right away it will stay away for the rest of the drive. I don't like warning lights so for now it's still button pressing time. I give him an A for effort, he really tried to get that to stay off.
Give it time, someone will figure it out.

I was hoping for a better solution for the ESS shut down, I have tried using it and as much as I have tried to like it I just don’t care for it so I will just press the button each time I get in it as I don’t like that warning light on the dash, surly someone will come up with a way to bypass this.

I have a Rubicon that does exactly as everyone describes. It will squeal on startup after it’s been sitting for about 30 mins or so. Never have noticed it doing it on the first start of the day. It always seems to be subsequent starts after sitting for 30 mins. Sometimes sounds like a belt but other times it sounds different. Any updates on this issue?
Yup.. just the starter. Common on JLs. I took it in and they told me the same. My friends now have JLs and they make the same noises. No issues.

Hi everyone,

If you'd like this concern escalated, please don't hesitate to reach out to me via direct message. A Case Specialist would be glad work alongside the dealership as an additional layer of assistance.

Hi everyone! I just purchased my JL two days ago (02/13/18) and everything was perfect with the vehicle until I noticed something today. When I pushed the start button (I had my driver door open) I heard a brief "squeal" noise coming from the car when it started up. This noise doesn't occur every single time I start the Jeep, but randomly. To elaborate, it's a brief squeal/squeak noise when I start the wrangler and there are no other issues. I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this and what could be causing this on a brand new vehicle (currently 287 miles).
Thanks

UPDATE: So currently it's been pouring raining all day and I find a leak coming from where the rearview mirror is attached. Honestly, I have no clue what to do at this point. First the squealing and now this. I'm waiting for the manager at my Jeep dealer to contact me back.
Same noise here!! Another JL owner says they hear it too, it’s not every time, it’s random... going to ask my dealer Tuesday.. I thought belt too but idk... drives me nuts...

Same hear (pun intended). Bought my JL Sahara with 34 miles on it and that night I heard the squeal. It's very intermittent and I've only heard it when I use the push button start. May guess is the belt but I was going to mention it to the deal next time I'm in.

Side note - I despise the auto shut off/start up. I'd like to punch the engineer who decided that you have to set it to off every time you start the car vs. a permanent solution. It may "save" gas but I say it's hell on the engine and starter.
First of all, blame VW for that one with their mileage scamming scheme. Additionally, Jeep upgraded the alternator among various other parts to accomodate the increase of start/stop functions .
