Thanks. I potted my sensors to work around this TSB, and don’t think they’re to blame. (When those fail the light stays on and the lockers won’t work.)

Here’s a new data point: I rotated my tires and did a 900 mile round trip to the Adirondacks. Lots of highway, hills, and some dirt roads. The problem did not recur.

I am wondering if some connection (wheel speed sensors or wiring harnesses) got blown clean with wind.

This is a weird one. Let’s see if it comes back with normal grocery getting.
Update: problem never came back. Seems it was indeed a dirty sensor.

How strange. The other day I was parked at the train station waiting to pickup my daughter. A storm rolled in out of nowhere and there was a small micro-burst. Wind was whipping so hard I thought my soft top was going to be ripped off - wind was getting in between the roof and sides.

Anyway, while the wind was whipping (and kicking up sand) the service axle idiot light came on and off a few times. I was just sitting there with the engine running. A minute later the wind was gone and the light hasn’t come back on since.

How could string wind trigger this event, I wonder?

Also, eff this climate change. I live in Connecticut, not Kansas!

Also, may need to clean the steel fuzz off sensor magnet again since/or if it’s due for fresh gear oil.

Maddening! After a loooong period of quiet, this damn idiot light starting coming again with a vengeance. Happens randomly while going down the road up to 40MPH.

I'm still on original brakes 7 years in, and they're only 50% worn. I'm not about to dismantle them just to get at the ABS sensors, if it's even them.

Between this and my ACT clutch issues I'm not enjoying my Jeep this summer!

Diagnosed this using JScan. The Jeep was getting an intermittent C1416-13 “Front Differential Control Circuit Open,” so I figured it had to be either the sensor I potted, its internal harness, or external harness.

I started to notice it would happen when wet, or when flexing the front suspension. That led me to believe I should try the external harness first.

I replaced the entire left front chassis wiring harness. It carries both the front locker and LF wheel speed sensor wiring. The original harness (68325447AD) has been superseded several times, with the current part being 68325447AI.

The replacement wasn’t too bad. Removed the driver’s front wheel, fender, and liner, swapped the harness, and it seems the intermittent fault is finally gone.

If anyone decides to do this, start at the firewall. Pull/undo one spot on old harness and then connect new harness to that spot. In other words, install as you uninstall. If you take the old part out completely you’re going to have one hell of a time finding all the connection holes on the frame. This was my son’s idea, and I’m glad he was there to offer it!

Bonus: the job gave me an excuse to buy 11” long needle nose pliers from Harbor Freight to reach all the fender clips. $22 for the Icon pair. They’re pretty decent.

FWIW, my son and I used this approach to remove the fender. I bought extra clips ($10 on Amazon) just in case, but we didn’t break any.
