First time poster here. I hope this post helps somebody out, since this issue was ruining my new car experience. To the point that I was very close to listing the car for sale.
My 2020 JLU had an extremely annoying rattle when hitting any sort of bump (expansion joint or pothole). I read every message forum post I could to try to resolve this, but what I'm about to explain was never discussed. Many folks mentioned loose fasteners (which I found a few of those), and some stated issues found near the sun visor area. Mine turned out to be something completely different.
Sorry, I didn't take better pics, but I'll try to explain.
The yellow line in the pictures represents a rubber sheet material. I'm not sure what the purpose is of this part, but it needs to be isolated better from the HVAC ductwork (the blue line). When going over bumps, the rubber sheet was bouncing off of the HVAC duct and turning my HVAC vent into a speaker which was pointed right at my head! It seemed to get worse once the vehicle was warmed up. I'm assuming since the rubber sheet became flimsier with higher temps. I ended up stuffing a couple pieces of foam (the red lines) to isolate the rubber from the plastic HVAC duct.
I'm sure there's a better way to permanently fix this, but after two unsuccessful dealership visits and a lot of my time wasted tracking this down, I figured enough was enough.
I honestly thought the issue was the top dashboard trim piece the entire time.
I'm happy to report after 6 months and thousands of mile, the noise is still gone.
Again, I really hope this helps someone out!!

What area of the dash is that a picture of? It’s zoomed in too much to be able to tell where that is.

I gotta give @egcronen a big thanks for this thread. I had this same issue. It was getting to the point that I wanted to throw a road flare in it and walk away. It started out intermittent, but after 3.5 years had become a constant annoyance.

A friend of mine actually found this thread. I disassembled my dash for the second time in a week. The first time was to install new speakers, and I thought that would take care of the rattle too. Nope.

So, I diassembled everything and found the offending piece mentioned in the first post. I used foam and the soft side of Velcro tape to isolate as many pieces from each other as possible. Put it all back together and the rattle was gone!

My rattle started today in my 2019...hoping that you're fixed will fix it! Is it tough to pull out the instrument cluster?

Dear @egcronen , I am getting crazy with such a rattle. I have already disassembled my dashboard two times with no success. Could you (or any with the same solved issue) please confirm if this is the kind of sound you had? Thanks for sharing!
