As many of you know, the USB ports in the dash and center console are energized at times even when the engine starter button is in the off position.

This fact has given me a "first world problem" (i.e. it's not really much of a problem) in that my wireless CarPlay dongle, plugged into one of these two factory USB ports, will energize in turn when either of these ports is energized, and start playing music from my iphone simply when I unlock the door, even when the vehicle entertainment system is turned off.

(I know: some might call that a feature.)

While I could make the dash cigarette lighter plug: an outlet not energized when the engine starter button is off, into a USB outlet, with the purchase of an adapter, for the CarPlay smart dongle to work it requires me to plug it into one of the two previously mentioned factory USB ports. If I've got the terminology right then a USB outlet created off the cigarette lighter is simply a power port while the two factory provided USB ports are both data and power ports(right?).

One thing I could do to address this is put one of these USB on and off switches between one of the factory USB ports and my CarPlay dongle that I plug into that factory USB port, manually turning the switch on after cranking the engine, to prevent this "problem" and turning it off when I turn off the radio/vehicle.

But I was wondering if anyone knows of a USB on/off switch, that is turned on or off by the presence of another power source: and I don't care if its 12V DC, or USB power, or even 120V A/C.

Yes: those in the know would call it a relay that I seek. So I'd be looking for an off the shelf relay that allows power to flow through a USB port when another port has current.

As most of you know the cigarette lighter or (I think) electrical outlets in the back seat of my JL Sahara are only energized when the engine start button is not in the off position. So I could use either of these power ports with the (fictional?) relay I seek to control whether the factory USB port I plug the dongle into has power only when the engine start button is not in the off position.

Many thanks getting through this post with/for me. :)

Without having my Jeep yet, or a schematic handy - what are the chances the USB ports are on their own fuse? If so you just need to pass that fused circuit through a normal open relay and power the relay off of one of the other circuits that only energizes when you are running.

There is a write up on how to hide the dongle inside the dash. I added an additional relay on the power line that I connected to the aux 4 switch so that I can easily turn it on and off without turning the vehicle off. Might want to look into something like that!

That’s it! I also took a smaller 12v relay and cut the red power line to the circuit card inside the CarPlay dongle (routed now through the relay on the “always closed” pins—so that if the relay died i wouldn’t lose CarPlay) and attached that to aux 4. Works perfectly. I can turn it off and on as desired (which really helps when I either want CarPlay to stay off, or if the dongle freezes and I need to reboot it, which is something that following that guide alone would not grant). I should have gotten pictures but I might be able to draw a rough schematic tomorrow when I’ve got access to my computer at home.
