I am happy to explain. If you put 5.13 in a Sport front axle your ring gear teeth will be very small (and weak) compared to 5.13 teeth in a Rubicon front axle.
But I thought you said 5.13 gears weren’t strong enough for rubicon axles.?

Haha. Where did I say that? Since you mention it though, 5.13 teeth will break easier than 4.88 teeth no matter what the axle type but the issue is compounded in the Sport because of the small ring gear.

Just ask @cosine he knows!
And then you can be like me “I’m not spending any more on these Rubi axles because I’m getting tons”?
Maybe I can sync up a trip to Oregon just about the time you make that switch, I'll bring a trailer, and a huge jar of bills :)

I think we're going to need receipts for all these gears people are going through. Since @word302 just DIY'd his own he gets a pass :)

Since he doesnt know the difference between a Sport and Rubicon ring gear I'm calling b.s. that he did his own re-gear. Just sayin.

But wait, your first JL was a rubicon, was it not? What Jeep did you shred the ring gear on? I'd love for you to point me in the direction of a single post where you talk about your JL with 5.13s and 37s. Pretty sure it's a myth.

Just saying your stories aren't really lining up my man.
Haha. Nice try. Name one story that doesn't. The quote you stalkishly dug up,

"We have 5.13 in our D30 with 37s and beat the crap out of it. So far so good"

is talking about the same Jeep I mentioned above in this thread:

"I do have 5.13s in a JK but I am not talking about that because the 5.13s actually work very well with the JK engine and transmission combo"

I have JLU Sport 2L turbo. I just put on 35" tires with a 2 1/2 inch lift. I've noticed power/mileage issues. Which was expected with the added mods. I'm just wondering how important it is to regear from the stock 3.45. And if I do regear, which ratio would be best?
Yes. 4.88. Do it sooner rather than later. You won't regret it.

edit: ruh-roh... just read some of the previous posts. I'm gonna go have a beer ;-).

1. RPMs with 5.13 and a BFG 37 is too high.
2. The teeth on a 5.13 are too small and break too easy. Ask me how I know...
3. You seem to be the only person that agrees with him and visa versa.

So which Jeep did you break the ring gear in? Which axle? What happened to this mythical JL with 5.13s and 37s?
