Hello everyone. Long time no see. Funny how after we get our ordered JL we quit checking JL Forums 20 times per day :) Anyway. Had a little issue this morning and thought I would share. Not a gripe or anything. This is my 8rd Wrangler and I've learned to take the good with the bad. On my way to work this morning I got a "Service Shifter" warning. It would only do it when I got down to 0 MPH and go away after I started moving. No biggy. 5K miles and no issues so far other than the missing offroad pages like everyone has. I'll call the dealer when I get to work I thought. I get to work and put it into R to back in my spot and nothing. It won't go into R or P or even back to drive. Nothing. N is blinking. Figured I could push it out of the street anyway but no luck. I prob could have shifted the transfer case into N and been able to move it but I just waited on roadside assistance.

Now here's the part were I'm putting out a PSA before I even hear back from the dealer on what the problem is. I will edit if I'm wrong but.... So I run softop from March-October and topless most of the time. With my previous Wranglers I never sweated them getting wet inside if I ever got caught in the rain. Wipe everything down, wet vac carpet and boom, I've had a detail done. The new re-designed softop is maybe my favorite new feature. So freakin easy. I leave the side panels and back plastic out, unhook the latches and lower the top in 20 seconds, same thing putting it back up. Doors on, windows up, top up, if it rains no biggy, the back will get a little wet but no problem. It's a Jeep. Well it came a soaker last night. Top was up, windows up, doors on but side panels were out and back plastic. Why the back getting soaked would cause a shifter warning IDK. The wiring for the hard top has a rubber plug and it's in place. No water got in that harness. IDK. Now the dealer hasn't contacted me yet but I'm just waiting for the "It's your fault, water caused it, no warranty" call but again. The front 3/4 of my JL was dry and I've never minded the interior getting wet anyway.

PSA part: It looks like our JL's aren't like previous Wranglers and just a little bit of moisture might cause problems. If your like me and run topless and don't worry about the inside getting wet those days are over. Too many electronics I guess. From now on if there's any chance of rain I will be buttoned up. Pain in the butt but..... Now, could the shifter warning and the rain be unrelated? Sure. It's just I've had zero problems, got some rain inside my rig last night and then a warning light and disabled. Just doing the math. What a wet subwoofers has to do with the shifter IDK but I'm sure when the tech calls it will all become clear as mud, errrr rain :) I'll update when I hear from the dealer. Tod in Arkansas

Hi Tod,

I was actually born and raised in Little Rock, AR. Anyhow, just wanted to chime in to let you know our team is available via direct message if you're thinking you want to get this looked at by the dealer. We can get a case set up and escalate to a Case Specialist.

Hi Todd, I have a 2018 (out of warranty) that has been suffering through the service shifter issue for nearly a year. When the warning pops up we can’t shift into gear, sometimes lose power steering, and occasionally lose dash instrument function. Our Jeep has spent months sitting at the dealership’s and we’re out of pocket thousands of dollars spent on unnecessary repairs that the dealerships insist are part of their troubleshooting process.
I see lots of threads about this issue but yours might be the oldest that I’ve come across. I am curious to know if this was a recurring issue for you and, if so, what was the fix for yours? (By the way, no water exposure here.)

Service shifter warning is actually the ground cable going down to the tranny that has a bunch of corrosion on it. Remove and clean with a file everywhere then spray with WD-40 and put back together! Bang! Done! No more issues! The wire is down under the shifter on the side of the tranny. You cant miss it!

The repair that seems to have worked for us was a replacement of the CAN C IP (star) connectors/wiring harness (which lives behind the glove box.)

Tech states "PUSHED BACK TERMINAL 17 IN THE 1920A INLINE CONNECTOR"

Anyone know exactly where that is? Is this the "behind the glovebox" fix?
