While driving the other day i got a screen flash in the center display "Service Shifter" then the Check Engine Light & ESS light came on. The jeep is now stuck in 8th and i can not change gears either manually or by asking for a down shift pressing on the gas pedal. Had to pull over to side of the road and shut the jeep off. Tried to restart the jeep and nothing would happen when pressing the start button. I keep trying to get it to restart for 2 or 3 minutes when it finally restarted. The Check Engine Light was still on but the ESS light was not, but at least I could now shift into other gears. Also the ESS function was no longer working at this point. Drove home and was going to take it to the dealer after the holiday and try to see if there was a code. When I plugged in my code reader the CEL when off and reported no codes. So I went for another drive and everything seem normal except for the battery voltage which is all over the place from 12.8V to 14.1V while driving, I think it may have a bad battery or Alt as this should be at 14.V when ever the engine is running. Has anyone else had this issue?

Not sure if this is related but there is a recall or tsb for the shifter rod.

The Voltage will not stay steady at 14 volts as in years past. The system will charge when needed. The gauge readings you are seeing are normal.

You may have a bad shifter. Do you have issues in automatic mode or only when you are manually shifting gears?

Only happened in Auto mode once the other day, since then i have reseated all of the fuses and relays which about half of them were not down all the way and it was the first hot 90 deg. day that the jeep had been driven in. The next day was another 90 deg day in which I went for a drive to see if it would repeat and have not had any problems so far. thanks for your feed back

Hi IPSCOJL,
We're glad you reached out with this, as we can understand how this could be frustrating. Same thing happened to mine. I had it in the shop to change the heater core and do the steering recall. When I picked it up it flashed service shifter. Today I got in it to take it to the shop and they check engine light was on and it would not get out of park. Finally after restarting it several times it would go into reverse. I dropped it off at the dealership a little while ago.
