Hello folks,

mew JLU and did first trip to San Rafael Swell. Serious distu conditions but everything in the back of Jeep was covered in dust. Can I remove or modify the real door vent? Is the dust coming from elsewhere?

the vehicle is 2022 JLU XR The XR edition does have the reinforced tire carrier with 35’s mounted. Is that worse than a standard door hinge? Does a camp table modification help close the vent?

thanks!

You have a leak somewhere. A couple of weeks ago I was on some seriously dusty trails. Very dry, fine powder. My interior was very clean afterward.

When out west with that fine powder dust, my JLU would collect dust around the rear gate rubber seals and sometimes get inside the cabin in the back. I don't know if there's a way to keep that crap out. It's so fine it seems to get everywhere. I always used a leaf blower when I got back to get rid of most of it.

Are you running a rear mat? Some of them don’t play nice with tailgate tables. Could be you’re not closing quite all the way if the table is pushing into the lip of the mat.

Usually with dust intrusion through a bad door seal I see a clear visual indicator of the plume. Your dust was evenly distributed with no heavy concentration where it entered?

San Rafael dust is adamant. The interior is going to get dusty no matter what you do. But if it's excessively dusty you might want to check the tailgate vent. There is a flap inside the tailgate vent that is supposed to let air only go out. Maybe some mud got in there and is preventing it from sealing? San Rafael dust will storm the castle if that happens. The easiest way to at least see it is to remove the inside plastic of the tailgate. Cleaning it might require removing the spare tire mount.

Keeping your fan on high (and windows closed) is also a good idea. Makes air always want to flow out of that tailgate vent.

About once a month I use 303 on all of the door seals, to include the tailgate and rear glass. It keeps then clean, pliable and eliminates the squeak where the rear window seal meets the tailgate. It also gives tou the opportunity to check that the seals are all on correctly and that there is no damage to them.

Make sure that the seal on the rear of the hard top is completely pushed up onto the top. It’s easy for ot to get pulled a little and allow a leak. Also, tailgate sealsmcan be easily damaged from loading and unloading.

Brilliant idea.

I've been driving around the Swell since we picked up the new Jeep in February and haven't had one trip where I didn't have to blow out the interior with my compressor. I just figured that was a Jeep thing! It has become a ritual when unloading from the weekend to break out the compressor hose, open all the doors and start blowing and then I wipe it down to get the last bit off all the hard surfaces. It certainly seems like it is coming in through the rear tailgate vent and around the rear window seal on both sides at the bottom where it meets the tailgate. I can certainly live with it considering the fun we are having in the Jeep!

There is an older thread on the forum that discusses a potential door seal problem with a (non Mopar) door sill protector(s). If you have installed door sill protectors, you might want to check out the old thread, or look for light leakage through your door seals.

What he said...removed RR door sill protectors and eliminated 90% of dust intrusion.
