Jeep Wrangler JL ~"Serious offroading"~ 9ge79

So this is something I've seen mentioned on these forums and on the internet in general in regards to Jeeps, specifically Wranglers VS "The Competition"...and pick your poison, could be a 4Runner or maybe a Land Cruiser...anything with 4wd really it doesn't matter.

But someone will inevitably say something like "well I'd only buy a Wrangler for Serious Offroading" because a Jeep isn't good enough for X...where X is any activity that apparently isn't Serious Offroading.

So great forum hivemind, what is Serious Offroading? Is it hopping curbs at the local strip mall or going to Moab? Something in between? What say you serious offroaders™?

I feel like the whole thing is just to make up reasons to drive boring ass cars but I'm just an internet idiot so what do I know.

Serious off-roading is going to differ for everyone. For me personally, I like to do the Rubicon Trail, Fordyce Trail, or Pritchett Canyon in Moab for example. I wouldn’t want to take a LC250 through these without major mods.

Example of a modified LC250 tackling Fordyce:

For me "serious offroading" requires 4WD low range and/or higher than average ground clearance. Pick a road, drive a Subaru* on it until it won't go any farther, anything beyond that is starting to become serious offroading.

(*various other vehicles could substitute here- anything Toyota, maybe anything Japanese, Ford Explorer)

I had to drop those on some pretty serious boulders to get that kind of bend out of a steel tube!

Bottom line, "serious offroading" means different things to different people.

To some people with buggies, anything short of a 10+ rated trail is not off roading.

To some people, a 4 rated trail is too much.

Everyone has a different point of view.

Living in Hells Acres (AKA Arizona desert) where most of my wheeling is dry and rocky...I consider 'serious' off-roading where the max speed on my lifted 2-door Rubi riding on 37's is about half a mile an hour... 🤣

I'm specifically calling out "the normies" who think a Wrangler is only for "serious offroading" here.

@grimmjeeper nailed it. My Jeep is axle swapped, on 42s, with a roll cage and harnesses. What qualifies for serious to me and to someone who just bought their Rubicon is going to differ.

It doesn't really matter though, as long as you're having fun and stretching your own capabilities as a driver each trip, then the rest is just noise. I've been out with new gen Broncos on trails at King of the Hammers and they did ok and had fun. Were the Jeeps better for this technical rock crawling? Yes. But most modern vehicles can outperform most people's perceptions of their own skill.

"Too fast" for my grandma in a 1989 Cutlass Supreme is "way too slow" for an experienced track driver in a C8 Corvette. Just depends on the person and vehicle.

I was hoping that this thread would contain pictures of people seriously off roading. Like these.

I

That's just samples from the first couple years of potential serious off roading. It is nice to look back. This would be from about 2020 to 2022.

I don't consider myself a serious rock crawler but I have done the Rubicon trail and the dusy ershim which when it comes to offroading probably the toughest trail i have done. Scariest is probably potato salad hill. I am not serious enough to run tires over 35's so I am in the not so serious but want to have some fun camp. I am also knock on wood not so serious of an offroader I break parts...I have been doing it long enough we no longer take many photos.

We do barely moderate trails with a couple of different Jeep clubs. Nothing “serious” at this point. As anti-social as I am on this forum, it will be no surprise that my wife is the social one and we like Jeeping to meet other people. At least she does.
