The military replaced the Jeep with Hummers and mostly four doors but some were two doors either because they were made into a pickup style or for other reasons.
Correction: It's humvee or hmmwv not hummers. Hummer is the wannabe by GM.

But I get what you meant.

And I scratched my diff, no more.
What if I told you that scratching your dif isn't "breaking" anything. It's not even damage. It's wear on a Jeep doing Jeep things. You'll never drag your diff enough to actually cause damage or wear through it. Drug the same Dana 60 in my XJ through rocks for over a decade. Don't worry, it'll be ok.

I've been wheelin' for a little over 40 years. Some for pleasure, some on the job, most in Colorado and eastern Utah..
To me, serious off roading would be trails rated OVER 5-6. Also trails posted old school style where the sign says 'expert drivers only', 'vehicle damage likely', and often trails that can only be run one way.
If the sign just says 4 wheel drive recommended, it's probably not serious.
Earlier in this thread, someone posted about not going out alone. While I agree it's always better to have two or more vehicles, I almost always have gone single vehicle style.
I generally avoid 'serious' trails. I'm from the era where goin' jeepin' often would take the place of the 'Sunday drive'. That usually means trials that can be scary, but not technically difficult. Trails that lead to ghost towns, and old mining camps, that don't require a lifted monster truck, or a rock crawler. Mosquito pass, Imogene, Engineer, John Brown road. If the going gets tough because of some seemingly insurmountable object, I just turn around. Getting me and my dogs stuck out in BFE just ain't my thing.

I'm on rear diff gears #4. Fragile Nitro 4.63 gears over and over again.

I put on NVM diff skids after the first failure due to paranoia. Didn't help. Spicer 4.56s in there now. We'll see!

You have a very unique and far from normal scenario and experience though (not that it makes it any better for you). Dragging a diff in the rocks won't damage it. When they had the stupid drain plug on the bottom there was potential to damage that. The old style Dana axles were prone to peeling the lip on the thin factory diff covers. The diff itself? No way your wearing a hole through it if you purposely drag it through the Rubicon multiple times for a decade.

in your opinion does the dusy ershim qualify as serious offroading?

that is why the most popular bumper sticker on a Hummer is "everybody loves" right above the Hummer
With enough money you can accomplish anything even dragging a POS ifs rig over Dusy.
It doesn't mean a fucking thing.

the one thing I found is a diff skid helps keep you from getting hung up as much.

With the design of these current axles they definitely aren't smooth on the bottom, but getting hung up isn't going to damage anything. I wasn't arguing against skids, I was arguing against avoiding rocks because you might scratch your diffs.

I was hoping that this thread would contain pictures of people seriously off roading. Like these.
From today, 1/18/25, Southern NV. I planned on a few buggy trails, so I took the poor man's buggy and left the 392 home today.
