Seat Release Cables WTF

Traded my 2 door for a 4 door and thought I was done with replacing seat cables. Nope. Went to fold the back seats today, left side no problem, right side wouldn't budge. Broke the handle. Why are these so poorly made? And these are much more expensive than their 2 door counterparts. $90 for one!

I'm sorry, but those particular engineers should be fired. My 200k Volkswagen is nearly 20 years old and those seats are robust and have always worked flawlessly. I don't know why everybody tries to reinvent the wheel.
Has anyone seen a DIY for this? I've only found the 2 door variant.

From the service manual-

Remove the seat back foam and seat back cover as an assembly, from the seat back frame.
Remove the screws (1) and the top cover (2).

Unclip the release cable from the seat frame.
Open the release handle and release the necessary cable end (2).
Unclip the necessary cable (1) from the release handle housing.

Remove the screws (1) and the foam support (2).

Remove the screws (1) and the mechanism cover (2).

Position the inner cover (2) aside, unclip the cable (1) from the mechanism and remove the cable end (3).

INSTALLATION

1. Install the cable ends to the release handle and mechanism.
2. Route the cable and clip it to the seat frame.
3. Verify the function of the release cable.
4. Install the mechanism cover and foam support.
5. Install the top cover.
6. Install the seat back cover.

No thanks. The time it takes to visit the dealer, probably twice because they have to order the part, I'll just do it myself. I don't trust them to do the oil change, let alone take the seat apart.

I finally did this today. What a PITA. I forgot one of the plastic covers, the instructions do not mention removing the bolts for the seat back, but it's the only way to access screws and get the cable off the outside mechanism. I had a real time getting it back together but I can say it's done and it works!

If you do this, order a spare bezel 6QY86TX7AA (right side) for $15.
You will most likely break the clips on the original. Many of the trim pieces are not designed to come back apart, despite what the instructions say.

Anyone know of a youtube video out there that shows the replacing of the rear seat right side seat latch? What a pc of junk of a design! I just bought a used 24 Sahara 4 door with 37k miles. I didn't try letting the seats down when I test drove because I wasn't aware of the issue. So 1 week after I purchased, I decide to let the seat down and the right side release handle just falls off in my hand. Whoever before had broke it and didn't get it repaired, traded it in, and now its out of warranty.

I have not seen a video, but if you have basic tools you can do this. Start with the left rear seat, unbolt and remove that. Then remove the right side and start disassembly. I'm sorry I don't remember all the specifics but once you start taking everything apart it's not too bad. The worst part is the prices.
