Hello,

Today I noticed some rust at the bottom of my shocks.
I've attached a picture.

What do you think? Is this still under control, or could it be the beginning of a potential failure risk?

It looks like the finish was scraped off. Any exposed metal is going to rust. If it bothers you, you can sand it and paint it but it would have to go pretty deep before breaking. By then it will be time to upgrade/replace your shocks anyway.

A bigger concern would be if you notice the shock leaking fluid.

Sand the rusted area and a little beyond it. You don’t need to go nuts just enough to remove anything loose and prep the surface. Then hit it with a primer and rust paint. Or just hit with a lanolin based coating.

there ample videos on the ‘tube testing product options. They range from useless / don’t waste your time and money to quite good .

I’d be surprised if it were anything much beyond surface rust

It is caused from exposure to salt being used on the roads.

This looks like more than surface rust unless I’m just seeing it wrong. Is there a small rusted through hole here?

If there was a hole, wouldn't the oil leak out? I see nothing but rust and a scrape.
Wire brush it and give it a coat of spray black paint, it's what I do when I see anything rusting.
