Well, holy shit. Although I've been off-road before in my previous F-250 and Denali 3500, a few days ago my Jeep buddy and I tackled Rocky Gap Road w/ our JLURs for what I would learn is ACTUAL off-roading.

We attacked it from the Pahrump side, since the Red Rock Scenic Loop was closed due to overcrowding.

I was simply amazed at how the Rubi handled. The Pahrump side was serious (...to me?) rock-crawling. We needed everything the Rubi had: front/rear lockers, sway bar, 4-L. The first time hitting my skid plates was extremely nerve-wracking...but they work!

Highly recommend, just be careful w/ the washouts...yikes.

Sounds like fun! What skids are you running?

Did you guys do the extra credits or something? Reason for asking is, that if you stuck to the "road" part of that trail there are some tight spots but, otherwise you should have been fine with it all. Can see all that excitement if ya did the extra credits.

Either way, good to hear ya had a good time. Questions, will you go back?

Well at some points on the Pahrump side, there really isn't a road...anywhere.

Different stretches involve the "washes", to the left 3-4 of them, and the "road". Fun trail but as you get more used to the Jeep and some experience, lift and tires, this will seem like a walk in the park. :like:

Haha, sorry. Epic fail.

Check this video out, it provides a great overview of the trail.

I did that trail in my stock Renegade. From the Pahrump side. Video is on youtube. Great trail. Join Las Vegas jeep life on fb and come with us for a trail run. We will put you to the test!

I've ran it a few times from the Vegas side with my XJ. Got my buddy through it with his new 4Runner, but it took hours of rock stacking and I was sore from head to toe the next day. He said he wont be doing that trail again. :CWL:

Might try to run it this weekend in the JL.

Do you think this is doable in a stock JLUR? Or would it involve a lot of underbody scraping? I’ve watched a few videos, but difficulty doesn’t always come across on video.

You'll be fine, there are spots where you would want taller tires but just slow and steady will get you through. You will bang a bit here & there but there are typically a few different lines you can take. Our 2dr sport w/ open diffs and 295/70/17s did this last year w/ only one spot where i had to back up and take a different line. We ran a few of the harder washouts too. Just be sure to go w/ someone as it can get pretty lonely out there and IIRC the cell service is almost nil.
Here's my thread on that trail run
