Lot of people have bashed Jeep for their prices. Seems like everyone has increased sticker prices. Sure inflation is a big driver as is new tech. But if you ask me...Jeep prices are not out of line with other comparable vehicles. And this appears to show that if you ask me.
It is not annecdotal. There are multiple articles on CNBC, Bloomberg etc that Stellantis raised prices more than any other outgroups, and that Jeep raised prices the most within Stellantis.

Below is one such gragh covering exactly the JL era from 2018 till the end of last year.

I’m being flippant…
Yeah, well, flippant or not ya gotta point there.
A $748.74 41 Jeep would only be $16,033.73 today !!! We are being robbed ! OK, so ya get a few more standard features ….. but enough to from ~doubling the price to about $90K more ? Huh ? 😁

Of course the Wrangler price From 2018 to current has gone up. Look at all the high end packages they added since the that others haven’t. 4Xe, Mojave, XR, 392, Rubicon X and all those extra bells and whistles that everyone just have to have.
It also could mean that Stellantis were cheaper on average than others and finally caught up. Cherry picking data only works to push an agenda.

This. Squeeze the stats hard enough and they’ll tell whatever story you want. The posted graph is bush league. Your analysis is spot on. The closest Jeep competitor is the Bronco. People should compare the CURRENT price of a Bronco to a Wrangler and report back. I don’t care about 2018 prices. If I’m a buyer today, I care about today’s prices.

I'm sure the release of the new 4runner will likely have an impact on Wrangler sales though. Just as the Bronco frenzy is subsiding a bit, here comes the new 4R. Maybe Jeep will have to keep the incentives coming our way.
Idk the two are completely different vehicles. If I want an open air, rugged, and offroad capable vehicle then the 4runner isn't it. If i want a cool looking suv then the 4runner might be a good choice.

Agreed, They are competing more with their own LandCruiser then they are with the Wrangler.

Unfortunately, that is not how the auto industry works. The fixed costs of production are very high. So production is planned for a certain capacity at a certain price point.

The LR defender and Bronco and 4Runner may have similar or even higher average prices and be OK, because they planned for much lower volumes than the Wrangler/Gladiator.

Stellantis and Jeep (which had the highest days of supply on the lots of any brand) planned for high unit production and were caught flat footed when demand dried up due to higher prices. That is why there are in a mad scramble to lay off people, cancel shifts, close production. Their pricing is incompatible with the volumes they planned. Ford faced some similar issues with the Bronco, but to a much lesser extent. Toyota seems to be OK (for now) on LC and upcoming 4Runner.

Jeep has a choice, lower prices or accept much lower volumes. They can't sell their planned volumes at current prices, simple as that. No wonder the CEO got axed.

P.S. The Gladiator and Wagoneer are the real nightmares for Jeep. The Wrangler moderately is troubled. The G.C. is less so.

Many people (specially those in more sunny/warm/dry areas) believe that the "open air' removable doors/top is the defining motivator for the Wrangler - and it may be in their area. Over here in New England, most Wranglers are buttoned up most of the time. In fact, my first and favorite Jeep purchase was my WJ, which (SFA/SRA) was just as capable as the Wrangler of the day, but had a V8 and no leaks or massive wind noise.

A lot of people just want a fun SUV for some trails, some adventure or just the image. The new Tacoma and new Ford Ranger devastated the Gladiator market, and have no "open air" option.

The new 4Runner will for sure be cross-shopped vs the Wrangler. Lower all the windows, open the sunroof, and lower the rear glass and you have a decent "open air" experience, with none of the leaks and wind noise of the Wrangler.

Competition is competition, even if just 5-10% of 4Runner buyers are Wrangler conquests it will have an impact.

To me as a consumer that’s all irrelevant. What matters to me is the price I pay. People keep complaining about Jeep prices. My thing is compare the prices against the competition.

You’re wrong. Do you not know what you could get a Jeep for in 1960?? The price increases since then are unbelievable.
Here is a chart the internet made for me. These are base prices.

YearModelOriginal PriceAdjusted Price (2024 dollars)
1960Jeep CJ-5$1,700$18,122
1970Jeep CJ-5$2,500$19,700
1980Jeep CJ-7$6,559$23,200
1990Jeep Wrangler YJ$12,356$28,000
2000Jeep Wrangler TJ$17,000$28,000
2010Jeep Wrangler JK$22,045$29,000
2020Jeep Wrangler JL$28,295$31,000

But The 4Runner is not new completion, it’s always been there and has there before the Bronco .. it’s just updated like the rest.

The Taco and Ranger didn’t devastate Gladiator sales. The Gladiator was the new kid on the block and took the sales from them originally. Now that those who wanted one has one and sales have dropped.

My 2020 TRD Off Road Premium was 40K, and has been an absolute pleasure to own and drive on the road, in serious off roading, and in the snow. It would be pretty hard to find a better serious $WD vehicle than this one, and nothing I have seen in any Jeep comes close for what I do.

That's pretty impressive considering the additions / changes that have been made over those decades.
