That is so strange. They have unsold 2018 and 2019 LHD vehicles sitting in the dealer lots. At the same time they have an unfilled demand for RHD vehicles.
I can't imagine the demand for RHD North American vehicles being more than a few hundred a year. It can't be worth their time to deal with producing them.

Perhaps... They have made them in the past. A friend of mine has a RHD she purchased when she was studying in the US. She is the main reason why I thought of buying a Jeep.

Jeep currently produces RHD vehicles for other countries. The infrastructure already exists.

The real issue is the lack of information. No one seems to know what the policy is. The original poster has not been able to get a definitive answer from Jeep. The US dealers who specialize in RHD vehicles don't seem to know either.

Perhaps senior management has not yet decided which way to go.

I got told in Feb/March they were not available in the US

I believe they used to produce 500 a year for US Market

I guess they can't be bothered with the different statutory requirements

I was asking if i could get access to a European produced one

Liekly i will just take my LH back to UK/South Africa

I don't know your situation, but if you're new DON'T buy a new or anywhere new RHD. Find something cheap with a steering console mounted shifter (older Blazer, Durango, CRV) and make sure the job is for you. There's a reason most offices have a turnover rate so high
i agree. i'm a city carrier, different world then a rural carrier (working on yr 13). their is unbelievable turnovers with cca. every one that walks thru the doors thinking they can do the job, finds them self walking out and not return. this job is not a walk in the park.

In general, the prices for used Jeeps seem out of touch with reality. You should take a look at the prices on Ebay. It is actually cheaper to buy a new Jeep. Who is buying these vehicles?

Here is the thing. You just never know how much torture they have been put through by the previous owners.

Just curious, do rural postmen need to use their own vehicles?

Until early 2018, I lived in a rural county for 20 years. I was in the county's 2nd largest city and it had a population of less than 2k. Other than the county seat (population 10k), all postal carriers were contract labor and the vast majority drove RHD Wranglers though a few had converted other vehicles. The Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealership always carried several new RHD Wranglers but when I look now they only have 2 used JKs in RHD. My aunt was a rural carrier in Oklahoma until her recent retirement. Same situation - contract carrier who had to supply her own vehicle and she always had a RHD Wrangler.

My friend told me all about the RHD Jeeps and the rural mail carriers. You are confirming everything she said.

This has been a part of the Jeep culture / Jeep tradition in rural America for decades. Unfortunately, this aspect of the Jeep tradition is likely to disappear in a few years.

I guess many of the mail carriers do not know that the RHD Jeeps are no longer being manufactured. They will only find out when they are ready to replace their existing vehicles.

That sucks.

Not all rural carriers have to provide their own vehicle. Some routes have a USPS vehicle assigned. Contract carriers have to provide a vehicle.
I am a USPS employee (not contract carrier) in an office with 8 rural routes. We all must provide our own vehicle and have a backup vehicle for when the primary vehicle breaks down. Our shortest route is 72 miles, longest is 129 miles. We literally destroy our vehicles in the course of our job.

How are you reimbursed / compensated for those miles?

I guess the only options for RHDs are 25 year old imports? I wonder how an old RHD Hilux would do.

Currently we get 74¢ a mile to cover vehicle, maintenance, and fuel. It's going to go down 1.5¢ in the next few weeks. It's tied to the CPI.

I just missed out on a 92 RHD Hilux with 47,000 miles. I couldn't convince myself that I could spend 11,000 sight unseen.

Postal Pete's prices are insanely high but supply and demand...

Check US Drive Right to see what a RHD Cherokee will set you back

Why are RHD vehicles so important in this industry? I read that they allow you to place the mail in the mailboxes without leaving the vehicle. Is this so?

Why did Wranglers become the standard vehicle? Weren't other RHD vehicles available?

This forum is a great place for motor vehicle enthusiasts. I have learnt so much new stuff since I have been here.

RHD vehicles are important to a mail carrier because it's much easier on the body than driving from the middle. For my first 6 years as a carrier, I drove from the middle - left hand to steer, left foot for gas and brake. That much reaching puts a massive strain on shoulders, elbows, and hips. With the increase in online shopping, large parcel delivery puts further strain on the body when you have to scoot across.
