Regular Maintenance Records

Hey there

So I’m coming up on 3,000 miles and after calling several dealerships around me and asking the service department basic questions like:
- How many quarts of oil do you put in JL’s?
- Do you do a 4 tire or 5 tire rotation?
- Is it possible to flash the system to accept LED lights?
- Etc.

Coming from a Toyota this was surprising to me as I had nothing but good experiences with my local Toyota dealership, but I’ve come to the conclusion that I would rather not have any dealership touch my Jeep.
With that said, I reached back out to the salesman I bought my Jeep from to ask about doing maintenance myself and if this would void any warranties and I got complete radio silence, should I really be surprised at this point?

I’ve decided to ask the community here if there is an agreed upon method for keeping track of maintenance records, and if anyone has experienced their warranty being voided because they did their own maintenance instead of taking it to the dealership.

And yes, I do all my own maintenance. I do not go to the dealer for freebie tire rotations and oil changes.

My wife bought a new Toyota last year and it came with free maintenance for 2 years. She took it in for the first two service appointments (even though I had already changed the oil 2x before the first scheduled maintenance). After seeing what they do, I had her call before the 3rd appointment and decided it wasn't going in anymore. Not because they were doing anything wrong but because it wasn't worth the trip. I'm capable and will continue doing the maintenance.

I bought my Jeep used but it was only 10 months old with less than 15k miles so it still has plenty of warranty left. As soon as i bought it, I changed the oil and front and rear diff fluids. I only did the diffs in case the previous owner went in some water even though I know there are diff breathers. The Jeep runs great and I have none of the issues some report on here thank goodness.

Doing your own maintenance will not void any warranties that I know of. I will do it on both 2018 vehicles as well as my older vehicles that are no longer under warranty. I simply write down on paper what I do and the date and mileage. I try to keep receipts but admit I don't have them all. I have not had any issues in the past with doing my own maintenance and warranty work being denied, but I've never had a big warranty issue.

What I like about using an Excel file to keep track of add-ons / cost of add on's and Maintenance is that the Excel file, automatically gives me a running total of my expenses..... and ......

Regardless of where I am, 24/7, regardless of what US State, I am traveling in, or interstate I am on, etc., I have immediate access to the Excel file with my Smart phone. No need to go home... wait til I ge back home to have access to the file. I travel a lot.

Easy to print out if and ever the time arises..

Reality is though as long as you keep track .. keep your receipts that is all that matters really.

I keep all my receipts and store records on a USB storage chip, I also scan my receipts. I've found that many receipts use disappearing ink and are virtually invisible over time.

I keep a maintenance log book, becomes pages of oil changes with miles, oil brand viscosity, filter brand. also put stuff like when I grease, rotate tires, change PS Fluid, Brake Fluid, coolant. other maintenance like full detail/clay/polish/seal, etc, also include when I change plugs, air filter, cabin air filters, pcv valves, hoses, brake lines, brake jobs, suspension work etc

have never had an issue on warranty work because have never had to have much warranty done. maybe good preventative maintenance = good reliability.

I keep all my records in my owner’s manual, including the maintenance completed, date and miles when completed.
