- this only validates the more paranoid among us regarding this very thing who wanted to remove these exact features

- its irresponsible of Jeep to not even bother to test their own software properly (they clearly did not) and then release it on a Friday of all days.

Reminds me of that article awhile back where hackers were able to reverse engineer certain makes/models and while driving down the road they could disable certain features. They even were able to turn on/off the car

IIRC, aren’t all 2026+ vehicles supposed to be able to be remotely shut off by the “authorities” for whatever reason they seem as legitimate?

This in a roundabout way shows vulnerability to hackers for an abundance of nefarious acts.

This incident is not an indictment on automation or over the air updates or technology.

Tesla has been doing over the air updates for 13 years. And in their vehicles they can update EVERYTHING over the air - down to steering and brake modules. And even when they were a tiny startup company, on the verge of bankruptcy, they never bricked cars en masse like Jeep just did.

In fact, the very vehicles that can have everything updatable over the air tend to be the most secure, the most tested, etc. Because they take it seriously and engineer it from the ground up for it.

This is an indictment on the decrepit Stellantis corporate culture, where quality, customer experience, etc viewed as an annoyance, not a core focus.

That is why I caution people from buying anything that is not in the main stream of Stellantis. Look how badly they screwed up the manual transmission. Look what a mess (leading to cancellation) they made of the diesel. 4xe and Wagoneer S were a complete disaster.

Sticking to the mainstream options (e.g. Auto ZF, 2.0 Global Midsize Engine) that are sold widely is no guarantee, but will improve your odds of not having catastrophic issues that they don't treat seriously.

So I went back to previous research on this topic and found that I didn’t remember correctly (it sucks getting old).

The HALT act was passed in 2021 and it told the NHTSA to issue a rule by late 2024 concerning drunk driving prevention technology. Still no rules due to privacy concerns, costs, feasibility, etc. and what technology to use.

Bill 6563 was introduced in 2023 called the “No Kill Switches In Cars” act because of all the rumors that the HALT program was going to be expanded. The bill failed to pass…

A lot what is claimed to be AI is basically the same nefarious people pushing keys in the backend, AI is being used to convince the masses it's not the same people doing the same old they have been doing for decades, using legacy methods.
