It's a constant battle with rodents since the introduction of veggie wiring and other nesting materials. Check under hood frequently and deploy traps where possible. I bait and trap, and also use repellents, which I do not have much faith in. I also encourage cats to hang around when I see them..

Living in rural Florida in the swamps and jungles, rats were a problem for us, in our vehicles, for awhile. The only damage we sustained, though, was from our rat-hunting Catahoula Leopard Dogs. They chewed up a steel fender on my wife’s previous vehicle, trying to get at a rodent that had sought refuge under the hood.

The solution that finally worked was to check under our hoods a few times a week, remove nests, and park the vehicles in different places if a nest was found. Having a very large yard worked out well, for that solution.

The rat population, at least here, waxes and wanes over the years. Now, the Jeeps aren’t parked by any fruit trees or the barn, and we no longer have chickens, so chicken feed was removed as a food source.

The dogs seem to do a pretty good job, but cleaning up the occasional dog puke with half-digested squirrels and rats can be disconcerting…

After the mouse chewed wiring problem I posted about back in September, I put a bunch of the mint rodent repellent granules, tied up in Bounce dryer sheet pouches I made, around the engine bay at the Jeep, and on top of the battery. The little bastards had chewed up nuts right next to the pouch on top of the battery when I went to check a couple of weeks later, and I had been driving it daily since. I also have the flip lid bucket traps all around my parking area, and I am now spraying the mint oil stuff in the insulation under the hood, and all around the fenderwells. I will say the traps have been catching quite a few mice. Hopefully it’ll also reduce the tick population.

I get this from Amazon. Throw some cotton balls in a plastic baggie, pour some oil in and place it around the engine bay where it won’t fall out. Depending where you leave them, you can drive with them there. Refresh the oil every month or so. Works for me for the past few years.
