Hello all. I’m new to 4wd off-roading and jeeps altogether. I know why we want sway disconnects in the front but why not the rear. Wouldn’t all four corners working independently be better and improve stability on trails. School this newb please.

There are some debatable benefits to having the weight transfer from the rear sway.

The rear sway bar is so light it doesn't really impact travel.

Counterintuitively, articulation is better with the rear sway bar connected.

Although I like Tinkerer's channel for IFS, a lot doesn't really apply to our solid front axle setup.

With a proper setup, the rear bar won't hurt your CTI, but it won't improve it either. I could see it helping RTI slightly if you aren't fully compressing front to bump.

This dude also concluded that keeping the rear connected helps get the front to articulate further.

edit: BUT I think you really need to tune the suspension to take advantage of that last little bit.

I always find this video interesting.

As he states in the video, the rear bar helps his RTI (Ramp Travel Index) but hurts his CTI (Corner Travel Index, the MC trailer he mentions).

We can derive from the crunch with the rear sway off that he is not bumping out the rear with the sway bar on (because it would crunch then). Because of how RTI works, that also means he's not bumping out the front with it off.

Since it's a mixed bag anyway, I just run it and don't worry about disconnecting.

@GATORB8 Admittedly it's been probably a year since I've watched that video last so I didn't remember that caveat but it's a really good point. Depending on the type of articulation being asked of the system as a whole, it might do better or worse. In a situation like that, I default to what's easiest, or like @Roky said "just run it". lol

Rear axle hits the bump stops or the end of the shock travel even with the rear sway bar. So you don't gain anything with disconnecting it.

Thank you gents. The video was very informative. Trying to learn as much as I can. Off-roading is new to me and it’s been fun the few times I’ve been out
