Came across this thread while installing my new Diono Radian 3R seat tonight... My wife and I both have 4xe's, so I believe our backseats are a little different from normal JLUs, in that our rear outboard headrests fold all the way down against the seat back, where it appears that most 4 doors only flip forward 90*. My understanding is that 2 doors fold down like the 4xe version though.

Where this comes into play is that according to the standard JL owner's manual, in a 2 door it is acceptable to fold the headrest down against the back of the seat and then install the carseat against it. One would then reason that it would be the same for a 4xe.

For the Radian 3R in forward facing mode, the top of the seat hits the headrest when it's up and it pushes the seat far more vertical than it should be. I then folded the headrest down and installed the seat against it with much better results, and as long as you're diligent about pushing down HARD on the seat when tightening the belt, it is rock solid. It also makes it really easy to connect and snug up the tether that attaches to the back of the seat.

My wife wound up being late coming home from work, which left me with an extra 45 minutes, so I decided why not try the headrest removal option... It only took a few minutes to access the headrest clips and slide it off the posts, so I did that. With the posts in their upright position, it was barely any better than with the headrest still in place, and not as good as the headrest folded down. YMMV depending on the seat you're installing.

What worked out great for me on my 4xe (should also work on a 2 door) was this... remove the headrest, fold down the posts, then install the car seat that way! It fit even better against the seatback and snugged down super easily, plus no odd-looking posts sticking up. I took a microfiber wash rag, folded it over several times, then pinned it under each of the posts while folding them down to prevent them from digging into the leather of the seat.

I finally decided to remove them. It wasn't fun, but can be done. Remove the headrests first. Screws were TX30. My plastic cable connection box was held on by a black cable tie. You do not need to open it, just lift at the base and slide the cable end out at the top.
The assembly was a pain to remove from the seat due to the limited space.

Hope this helps!

Hi, I just got my Sahara 4XE the other day and am trying to remove a rear headrest so I can fit my son's car seat securely. I asked the dealer to remove it and they won't for liability. But to me, a poor fitting car seat is also a liability.

Anyway, I looked at some of the photos in this thread, but it seems maybe the design has changed again? I was digging around inside the headrest and can't find the pins that connect the headrest to the posts. Does anyone have a 2024 model and have they tried this? Thanks!

Got tired of seeing my kids (6&8) sleeping slouched forward due to the headrests pushing the backs of their booster seats forward.

Total time to remove the headrests took ~30 minutes.

FWIW - I added seat belt extensions for the kids to easily access the buckles allowing them to buckle themselves in (information in pictures).
