ok, not sure if this has been covered or is the cause with so many rear defrost systems not working but as I was cleaning up my Jeep I noticed the rear window where the defrost system is applied to the glass...well it’s rusting.

Winter is over, so I don’t have a way of checking to see if mine works or not. Just checking to see if others are seeing the same issues. Pics posted.

Oh yeah...I don’t have any leaks on the back window and only cleaned it once after washing the Jeep. You can’t tell from the outside there’s an issue, but once you start inspecting each individual line you can see it go from normal to rusting to normal, etc. funny thing is where they sanded away the coating to connect the power on both sides...those areas are not rusting and it’s bare metal.

Mine is the same, as is my other buddy with a JLUR. I know if I press the rear defroster, the switch LED lights up and stays on. I haven't actually tested to see if it truly works though as I got the jeep early May. At first I was concerned but is this even a problem or just how it was made?

Not sure. If it continues to rust and then shorts the system I would say it’s an issue. If it’s just cosmetic then I don’t care. Just wondering what long term issues may arise and if any hoping the warranty covers it.

Yeah and I'm not sure if rusting is the proper description. I'd say discoloration. I'll have to check with my dealer.

True. If I rub it with my finger I can remove the rust/color and it’s back to normal. Not sure if it will last though.

Well that's interesting. When you refer to the "rusting" part, do you mean the sporadic areas where there is a brighter silver sliver?

Well it looks like it’s supposed to be all white or silver but then there are these areas where it looks like rust. When I rub those rust areas it comes off and looks white again.

I'm interested to see if others share the same thing, along with their input.

Same here, can’t say if rusting or decolouration but for sure it’s fading and loosing its life.

To be honest, it is a heating element, it's probably burning off the coating. Not sure how hot they get, but copper doesn't rust, and residue is likely just bubbled up coating.

Is this something that's been seen before for anyone? I bought in early May and have no idea if anything truly works until this winter.

Update...

Dropped by my dealership today and looked at several JLs. All had random discoloration spotting throughout the rear defroster grid lines. None of the guys knew what the deal was and if it was supposed to be normal. The one service guy seemed to think it was burning too hot. I'm scheduled to go in soon for something else and theynsill test to determine if the defroster actually works.
