It's a production vehicle. Stuff happens. It will get resolved. I am getting used to the bloody clutch and the engine seems to be getting a bit more frisky. But maybe that's just me getting used to it's power band. I now remember why I sold both 392 4 doors for the 2 door! Thanks for the replies.

Update for the group: dealer tried to shim gears to spec. Still had howl. Suspected carrier bearings. Ordered new rear axle assembly. I meet with them today to decide my next step. Either wait for the axle or trade up to same 2 door but with auto. Ugh.

I have the same setup - factory 4.88's and a 6-spd. When new my rear axle did the same exact howl as you describe above. At 5K miles the dealer replaced the entire rear axle under warranty, the locker sensor failed which apparently the fix is complete replacement. The new axle still had the howl on throttle lift, but it was much quieter. Over the next 5K miles the howl has gone away and now at 11K it is completely silent.

Good to know. Dealer overnighted a new rear axle assembly. Jeep should be good to go middle of next week. Most likely will drive it through the summer and order a 2025 when they become to be. Hoping Pumpkin becomes available. About done with the gray tones. Thanks for reply.

Update. Dealer pulled diff cover. Non normal gear pattern. Waiting for shim kit to correct. Sigh...
yeah thats not how it should work, once wear pattern is on, and its wrong, you need to demand a new gear set and then they set pinion properly

perfect, I made mention of this howl 6 months ago, no one made a peep. Mine howled decelerating 55 to 45mph, classic improper pinion setup. 2023, 3.6 auto, rubicon, factory 4.88 built during heart of strike. I'm a mechanic, and do not setup rear ends as it is an art.

Mine has been at the dealer last few days for them to look at this noise, poorly sprayed running paint, bad door sealant rubbing paint, bad hood orange peel, epic orange peel, and hardtop paint a flat black in most places instead of semigloss satin my three previous jeeps had, very rough etorque use, jerky throttle, engine shutdown before stopping, starting again when stopped, cracked windshield because of cold weather, not rocks.

@Jeep cares, where are you?

As I’ve mentioned, mine has the whine on coasting above 55 mph as well. But it did it from the factory and remained unchanged after I regeared and replaced the carrier with a Truetrac too. I think it’s the housing rather than the setup, at least in my case.

It will be interesting if the new axle howls. Then it most likely because of the new free float design which Jeep introduced in 2024. Either way, got 36000 or 3 years to sort out...NOT. Vehicle will be traded well before then!

Thanks. Dealer thus far has been doing what can be done. Updates as progress is made.

mine is a 2023, so pretty sure its not a free floater, unless it is??

I don’t see how floating would change anything. And mine is a 2022. Neither of us have the full float axle.

You are correct. Another theory shot to hell! Guess I will find out soon enough regarding the new axle assembly. If this one sounds like Lassie, then not sure what plan B might be...

That sounds like mine. Since new, my manual Sport has had a whine on coasting above 55 MPH. It disappears below that speed, and is most noticeable when coasting down from 70.

Most people will tell you it's a gear issue, pinion depth, pinion preload, etc. I initially ignored mine for 5000 miles because I planned to regear anyway. When I regeared, the sound persisted exactly as before. The odds that both Dana and me messed up the pinion preload or depth in the exact same way are very slim. So my thinking is it's either my axle housing somehow or it's a different component causing the noise.

If it doesn't bother you, and your power train warranty is still in effect, you might take a wait and see approach.
Did you ever end up getting it fixed or still have it?

Wow new axle had the same howl and eventually went away? Did it ever return?
