Today I had between 1/4 and 1/8 of a tank of gas. I slowed down at a stoplight, and suddenly (from inside the Jeep) there were beeps and lights saying "low gas." A large icon popped up behind the steering wheel, and a smaller one appearing by the gas level -- which now indicated it was basically empty. I began to freak out a bit, and decided to u-turn to the gas station I had just passed. But, on making the first turn, the level went back to where it had been, and all warning lights were gone.
I proceeded to drive several miles to where I had been intending to get fuel originally. No more lights or sounds.
I was on a very slight (downward) hill when the alarms sounded, but traversed much steeper inclines and declines on the rest of my journey.
Any idea what could have triggered this? Gave me a small panic attack -- we were in a populated area, and there was a gas station nearby, but I'd never seen that light (or experienced the accompanying fanfare) before today!
Background, in case you're wondering: A local gas station chain is doing a promo where you get rewarded if you get a certain number of fill-ups over a specific period of time. But, each fill-up needs to be at least 10 gallons. I filled up a few times with amounts like 8.4 gallons or 9.2 gallons, which don't qualify. It annoyed me, so I had been letting my tank get uncomfortably low. I have now decided the promo isn't worth the stress, and I'll forgo the rewards, which (in hindsight) were just silly anyway.
