I got a yellow gas cap light on my dash board today. I got our opened it and screwed it back on and the light is still on.

how long should I wait to bring it to the dealer or is there something else I can try myself ?

just some info I have a new 2021 rubicon 2 door only 1000 miles on it.

close the gas cap until you hear at least 3 clicks and drive at least 10 miles I'd say, having been through this with an emission light that came on (not the same light as yours) because my cap wasn't making a good enough seal (I switched caps.)

Of course the cause of your problem may be different from mine.

Thanks Gee, I will give it a try.

In regard to a JL or JT.... Protocol spewed by most Techs.... Remove the fuel cap.. Wipe well the lip of the opening where you screw on the cap... wipe to remove any and all possible debris there.

After the wiping, screw on fuel cap. It's always best to turn it until you hear at least 3 audible clips.
Listening for the 3 audible clips should be done at each fuel stop.

Now, just drive the JL/JT and it will clear the light on it's own after a few ignition on/off cycles and your driving a few miles. Do give 3 days use, to correct before you get overly concerned and contact the dealer.

Also, I read this in the past and have not had the occasion/need to try it:

Thanks for the advice. I did as you said wiped the cap, twisted it over 3 clicks and just driver about 15 miles. I gonna give it a few days and see what happens.

@Zayn2019

Wipe the neck of where the cap screws on to!

Did you try what was mentioned at the link I gave... I have always wondered if what was mentioned there / allegedly in the manual would clear the light.... Can you try and post back.... Thanks!

My wife's Honda wouldn't pass the annual emissions inspection until the gas cap was replaced. An imperfect seal on the original one (likely due to age, fatigue and of course recurring use) generated a CEL code.

Fitment of a new OEM cap solved the issue in short order. Possibly the gas cap on your new Jeep is faulty; if so, a warranty replacement is likely indicated.

I'll add that this is the first time I've seen a dedicated idiot light for this matter.

more color commentary.

I went out and bought the fancy locking gas cap for my JL. This is the one where you can match your vehicle's key...as opposed to the less expensive one with its own key.

The expensive one, as shown to me on video taken by my dealer of leakage testing, was spewing fumes like nobody's business and causing the emissions light to come on (again, maybe not your problem). This happened no matter how may clicks I heard upon screwing int.

The dealer uses this inert smoke to test.

I put the non-key matching locking cap on instead and the problem resolved.
