I have an idea - and wondering if anyone can share thoughts or images if they've done this...

Basically I want to be able to quickly secure - and/or - remove a storage box in the cargo area of my Jeep. I figured I could cut holes in the bottom of the box that line up with the D-Rings on the floor of the cargo space, and then secure it with locks inside the box. And then yes - the lid of the box would also lock from the outside.

I just use my cargo area for so much various uses (picnics with kids, hauling stuff, etc) - that I don't want a big storage solution. But I would love to have something that could keep a few things safe when I'm cruising around topless and need to run into the store, etc...

Thanks!

Your plan sounds OK to me. I'm not much help in the storage area, my set up is very simple and boring, the strap I use is cumbersome. I'll share a photo with y'all, but I don't expect a standing ovation, I hardly like it myself.

I would be interested in seeing a photo of yours when it's completed.

Best of luck friend.

You don’t really say what size you’re picturing but what about a 8 gallon Rubbermaid Action Packer. They are lockable and you could use a couple of fender washers and bolt it to the floor through the bottom of the tote

Thanks all (so far) - and yeah I'm not really sure what size. Just kind kicking this around in my head right now. Gut instinct is to use something metal....but of course I'm open to size/material input from anyone who might have made something like this before...

FYI: items I might leave in there: camping hammock, skateboard, auto tools, pair of hiking boots, other odds and ends...

My mind went straight to Milwaukee Packout gear because there are many options/it’s modular and because I’ve seen a few examples here in the forums.

I’m not sure if the boxes are lockable though, or if the different modules docking mechanisms are lockable either.

have you looked at this at all?

I might look into that myself.

I think Rubbermaid has several sizes of lockable action packers. It’s probably enough to keep a lazy thief that’s passing by from walking off with something. I have a couple in the garage.

Thanks - good call on the ATV tool boxes!! Pretty good size, lockable, strong / tamper resistant, weatherproof. Gonna do some more research and measurements - but on the surface - this is exactly what I want to find a way to secure into the floor of the cargo space :)

This Milwaukee stuff looks cool - but not big enough for what I need to store. If it were just tools - then probably yes. But not gonna hold a skateboard :)

I have the Hooke Road cargo shelf in mine. While it doesn't completely close in the rear cargo area, it makes it much harder to see in and/or take anything out with the doors locked. If you had a large lockable tote or box back there it would be pretty secure without also having to worry about securing it to the floor. Every now and again the shelf is in the way of loading something large, but more often than not it's actually useful as extra storage space. It can also be removed in just a few minutes if needed. I found that placing a small bucket underneath and wedging a moving blanket on top is perfect for a one person removal as it supports it as you take the bolts out or put them back in.
