Hey all. I'm new here! I recently bought a 24 JL in August. I have about 4400 miles on it currently and love it. I did read old posts etc...but I am not sure my "issue" is an issue.

I notice that i can "feel" the shift from 4th to 3rd in the drivetrain (I have a 3.6 Auto) only SOMETIMES and its when I'm normally when braking. Other times, if i sort of catch the car between 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th and feather the gas, i can sometimes feel it "catch" the gear and i hear a mild click. Neither of these things happen consistently. No jerking or shifting issues, no loud clunks or bangs, but can hear a very low thud sometimes when one of those occurs. Nothing alarming, but I've read in numerous places this is normal, and then I've read people say that any sound at all when shifting "take to dealer replace trans, take it 100x until they do", so I'm a bit lost.

Any suggestions? Its not effecting drivability.

Also, side note, i am from CT and looking for a mechanic that wants some side work for Jeeps. Mine unfortunately passed recently. If anyone can recommend anyone, let me know.

Thanks in advance!

I went through checking this out at the dealership. It’s normal.

Similar issues. I purchased 24 JL a month ago and have not been overly impressed with the transmission. When accelerating through 3rd gear, with throttle held constant, it initially pulls, then seems to let off, then surge back at the top of the gear. Downshifting is most noticeable. 5 to 4 gets a noticeable thud when the shift is ultimately completed. As you said, this mostly occurs driving in town with light throttle.

I’ve read the same threads that say software reboot, valve body, transmission swap.

Scheduled to take to dealership mid December. Ironically also in CT.

Wondering what, if anything, I should say to service department.

I just bought a 2024 and what I think your hearing is the jeep down shifting, mine does the same thing.. I think their set up to downshift because helps with the breaking of the vehicle.. With that being said, this is the first automatic that I've noticed downshifting like a manual stick shift..

I have a 2015 Grand Cherokee. It downshifts to aid in braking as well. But much smoother.

The thud going from 5 to 4 and surge going through 3 on the way up is unlike my experience with the 2015, which has been altogether positive.

While coasting the transmission is deciding what gear to be in. When you step on the gas again it shifts (or doesn’t). Perfectly normal.

That makes sense. My only concern is the force that it does that, and sometimes i can hear a click, and why is it only in those lower gears at those speeds. Other than that, Its "fine" LOL. Ill check tomorrow as i mentioned and report back.

At the dealer. It’s “normal”. It’s a bmw transmission. They basically said unless it throws a light it’s fine. The only thing they’ve had to deal with on the 24s is porous transmissions that have seeped early. They also said I could adjust my gear ratio a bit for my tires. Other than that, just dog shit jeep stuff. I’ll drive it until it breaks.

I wouldn’t say checked out. They acknowledged it and said that. They didn’t do a ride along etc because I can’t replicate it and it’s very common. Even the head tech who I talked to said his with the same tranny has a rough second to first. I said “I’ll see ya when it’s breaks” and we left it at that. But he was very confident it’s a Jeep thing. I’m assuming some trannys are a bit more gentle etc and not all are the same on these but by no means does it need replacing.

Gotcha. At least it's "on their radar" if it becomes something. They "rushed" me in for an appt. because the Jeep was new and they checked it out. Drove it. Reset the transmission, but it's basically a Jeep thing. I've noticed it much less, but not because the transmission was reset, I'm just not worried about it and paying close attention.

Just an update. They programmed the car to my 35 inch tires and all the weird tranny stuff is done.
