That is not accurate, what Washington has is a Mirror law. Obviously, if you remove your doors... it also removes your mirrors, then you must have side mirror alternatives (2 rear facing mirrors in Washington, so you could get away with driver side and center rearview mirrors). I run door'less in Washington with mirror replacements every summer for years, and I've never had a cop say anything.

Just moved here to Walla Walla. Half the wranglers here in town, and there are a bunch here, have no doors.

Since this discussion is going all over the place, I'll add (again) my 2 cents ...
It seems to me that cops who really do face lots of critical situations seem to know what's important and what's not. They don't bother with the ticky tack crap. One of them told me last week that the part of the job he liked most was public service. The ones who don't face a lot of critical situations seem to need to justify their positions by writing tickets and harassing people.
That said, I will give examples. Detroit cops are great. Ann Arbor (university town) cops are generally d***s.

I said that argument. The Sheriff knew the RCW by heart to counter that argument. He was very clear. The factory doors that were included from the factory are required. It was part of the crash protection rating. Yes, we said the doors are not a structural member. Doesn't matter. The Jeep left the factory with doors, they are required on all Washington State roads, which includes Forest Service roads and beaches.

Most cops have better things to do. I see many Jeeps in Tacoma, Seattle, Naches area with no doors. Still illegal. My job requires a clean driving record. Doors stay on.

The windshield part actually makes complete sense

I think it had to do with the horseless carriage days. Law was never updated to include windshield. Which technically makes it illegal to drop a JL windshield. Wipers are removed to lower the windshield. Other Jeep models can legally lower the windshield for pavement use.

I ride a streetglide, I still pull the doors off my jeep at times and go down to the NH coastline ...

Naw, I don't buy that the same applies to Harleys as it does to Jeeps. 1) Harley riders wave because of the understanding that they are taking a risk for the enjoyment of being on the open road. We acknowledge that we are willing to risk getting seriously hurt or even die for the chance to ride a motorcycle and feel what others don't. 2) Jeep drivers are not taking any risk, they are not giving up their safety to experience a Jeep. Its just, "I have one, you have one' thing. Harley riders will stop for a broken down biker (most will), but not so sure about a Jeep driver. Sure, there are some of you that would, but not to the extent of what a Harley rider would.

Ya, the NH coastline is nice. Love it up there. Im doing a Portland, Booth Bay, Camden, to Bar Harbor on a 10 day ride next month. Not a long distance but thinking it will still be enjoyable. I suspect the traffic may be heavy in spots but something I'll just have to deal with.

I live in Georgia and I don't know what the law concerning doors are....because no one I know has ever been pulled over....because no one gives AF....because we're not idiots. (This statement excludes the greater ATL region)

FWIW I thought the same as you when I first got our Jeep.
I have owned Samurai's and Sidekick/Trackers, never took their doors off or even consider it.
Since it is fairly easy to do on the Jeep, I tried it.
I am hooked, they come off whenever the weather forecast is good.

What I have been pleasantly surprised by is how comfortable it is in the hotter weather than any of our previous/current drop tops.
We typically get a little uncomfortable at times running topless when it gets into the 90's.
But running the Jeep doorless in the 90's is really nice.

BTW I am also a Motorcyclist. I wave to all other 2 and 3 wheelers, most wave back.
I own a Miata and wave to them.

The Jeep thing....honestly there are too many, its not unique to me.
I do wave to other 2 doors and any running top/door less, not so much to the buttoned up 4 door soccer moms..

Harley riders never wave at me on my Z1000, is it because I'm not taking the same risk as them (riding to the bar, getting drunk, then reving at stop lights to piss everyone off)? Also; I wave to Jeeps because when my shit breaks off road it is other Jeep owners that I will be depending on to get me out and home safely. We have clubs that do nothing but go rescue other Jeeps. Waving is an acknowledgement of that bond.



Taking off the doors greatly increases visibility for offroad driving. It also increases air flow, allows you to hang a foot out, and is just more fun.

Oh come one they are not revving to piss people off they are doing that to keep the piece of shit bike running.

You are literally, directly saying to selectively enforce laws. You want officers to pick and choose their own set of laws, that’s chaos.

You don’t logically follow your own argument. Oh, mirror law makes sense to you but door law doesn’t. So if 1 state requires doors, it’s wrong, and the police should ignore it, but if yours requires mirrors, it’s perfectly logical and should be enforced.

lol, Do you really think all officers enforce every stupid law? Most have brains in their heads and only enforce stupid laws when the are confronted by a douche who deserves a stupid law ticket. Hats off to them in that case. This isnt chaos, this is having a brain, and logic and most have them.

I am unaware of any state that doesnt have a side mirror law. If they dont have that law I'm ok with that if it's not stupid. Never drove without mirrors so I'm not sure of any major safety deficit, but any state like mine who does have mirror laws doesnt sound stupid whereas no door laws do.

Personally I think having door off laws should only apply to 4 door jeeps since they look ugly without them vs a 2 door I dont think I will ever take my 4 doors off and if I do I dont blame a cop for a ticket. lol

First off. NICE JEEP!
Second off, doors off provide a very similar feeling to a bike. Try taking the windshield off (use goggles of course), pretty amazing. I never took my windshield off on the road but did off road with my CJ7 years ago. It is crazy how much air flow you get even at the slowest speeds.

A shame the newer jeeps are such a PITA to take down vs a two knob CJ.

I dont think the people here are anti-police. I suppose youre totally cool with everything the last 5 Presidents have said and done? No complaints at all?

As I stated before, I workout every day with 2-3 cops. When I was building my jeep I asked them for advice. Is this cool? Is this not cool? (legally).

They would tell me.... "if a cop pulls you over for that, hes a dick"
"yea, if he pulls you over for that, hes just being a jackass"
"yea, honestly, nobody is going to pull you over for that, if they do, they just have nothing better to do and want to write a ticket"
"No cop in this town is going to pull you over for that, but in Orlando, theyre all dickheads with nothing better to do and just bored"

People jumped on OP because "oh, being ignorant of the law doesnt excuse you." But nobody here knows every law in the book. And for something so petty? The LEOs themselves dont know all the laws. I posted an example that in Virginia you cant curse in public. Are you "pro-police sheep" really cool with that? I see cops breaking the law all the time. People are saying we shouldnt expect LEO to selectively enforce laws but they dont it with THEMSELVES.

I know not all LEOs are bad. We're not saying that. But lets not pretend theyre all good.

The only difference between us and them, is they have a gun and the judge on their side.
