Pull in 4hi or 4lo?

Recently took a trip to the Texas gulf where you can drive on the beaches. In the more crowded city beaches people would drive all sorts of small cars into the sand and get stuck if they wandered into the deeper soft stuff.

I had a strap with me and ended up pulling over a dozen people out of the sand over the weekend, most were accords or corollas but 1/3 were probably 2wd SUVs or pickups.

the jeep handled it great and drove 7 hours back home with no problems, but I do wonder if I should have been pulling in 4hi like I was, or if 4 low was better

IMO to pull someone out of the sand I would use 4 low....and always pulling while driving forward, never pulling in reverse.

Yeah I always pulled moving forward.
Is the reason you’d choose 4low just for the increased torque, or is there any other concerns? The jeep had no trouble pulling them even in 4hi

Just a warning from somebody up north. During snowstorms you always hear about people pulling others out of snow. Somebody always brings up the liability comment so I'll do the same. :D I know you're being nice doing it, but if something gets damaged on their car, would they make you pay to get it fixed?

Tow truck drivers up here have insurance that pays it out. Hate to see something happen just because you were trying to be helpful.

Yeah that was definitely something I thought about. It all worked out at the end of the day but I’m sure it happens

I pull in 4hi in the deep sand unless it's a heavier truck or buried. 4lo tends to dig and dig if I can't keep momentum.

4 Low just feels stronger, but either is fine. You now have a range. Good Job for being a nice guy! A real Jeep Guy.
