We’re heading out to the Buena Vista, CO area in a couple weeks and plan on driving some trails. Are there any off road vehicle permits required to drive around on public land In that area? We’ve been out there before and never bought any permits, but I suddenly started wondering if maybe we were supposed to. Thanks, Bruce.

Nope, you’re good. At least you should be assuming you’re hitting normal trails on USFS or BLM land.

We went in July and I got my off-road permit online through one of CO’s sites. It is required on some trails.
https://cpw.state.co.us
go to:
buy and apply
then boats OHVS & snowmobiles
then plated and non resident OHV permits

Awesome. Thanks for your quick reply. I’m planning on Mosquito and Tin cup passes to start with, not planning on going to any state parks. Should be a great time to be out that way.

Mosquito and Tin Cup are fine. Friends of mine just did Tin Cup a couple weeks ago. The area is gorgeous. We are heading to BV this weekend but won’t be hitting trails sadly. Enjoy!

Agreed. We did Mosquito last year and can’t wait to do it again.

BV is a great area. Did Tin Cup, Mosquito, Alpine Tunnel, etc. many years ago with with dad. Went another year with my son and dad. We ate at Quincys steakhouse probably three different evenings.

My usual go-to these days is Ouray when I can get out there.

The vast majority of 4x4 trails in Colorado are forest service designated numbered roads and are free to use with a full sized vehicle. There is a list of trails at the link that are designated a "trail" and require an OHV permit even on full sized vehicles. There are a few around Buena Vista to be aware of. The funds from OHV permits go directly back in to trail and wildlife management.

We ate at the Surf hotel restaurant one evening last year. Really enjoyed it. We’re planning on hitting it a couple times this year. Amica’s (sp?) pizza in Salida is always a hit as well
