I just received my last free oil change this past Friday and it'll be a good couple miles before I do my next one myself. I'm looking into the idea of buying and oil filter adapter. I've always wanted to run a reusable oil filter like the one Hubb makes. They have that 3-in one which I think would be perfect. But I don't know what the threading is on the OEM oil filter cover. If anyone has knowledge of the threading so that I can start looking for a adapter that would be greatly appreciated.

I've done a fair amount of research already and I can't seem to find any aftermarket options for What I want to do here, so regardless of whether or not you think this will work (and I'm cool with y'all discussing that here) I really just need to know the thread size. Worst case scenario I can spend 12 bucks on Amazon and get the cover myself, and figure out from there. It'd be a lot easier if I didn't have to spend any money if anyone here knows what the thread size is for the cover?

Thanks in advance,

Just to add a couple things I've found in my search so far.
The oil filter housing is made by UFI, happens to be a company based out of Shanghai.

The same oil filter housing is found on certain BMWs.

The BMW series 1 (F20/F21) hatchback has the Fiat 3.0 I6 Diesel. Without doing any research I would have to guess it's maybe the predecessor to the 3.0 EcoDiesel. Fiat as it turns out has been using different generations of the 3.0 EcoDiesel for the last 20 years.

Above is a screenshot of the filter on the EcoDiesel, which is also applicable to those other vehicles.
EDIT: I should add that the dimensions in the photo above are for just the filter, not the filter cover. So the outer diameter is going to be rightfully smaller than the cover diameter.

It's a process, but I figure my best bet is to figure out the threading on the oil filter cover and then use the diameter of the oil filter cover to find a adapter that would fit.
Being that UFI is a Chinese company I figured I'd have pretty good luck finding information on AliExpress. Go figure I found the diameter of the oil filter cover.

79 mm is the width of the threaded section. I have the diameter now I just need to get the thread size. And then all I have to do is pray that they have a adapter that is made in the same size. On the flip side I could actually have one custom made too once I get those specifications. It might be a little expensive, but I'd be up to give it a go in the years to come if I have to have one custom made.

Keep in mind the total length 141mm of the filter too when looking for an alternate housing. There isn’t a lot of extra room when taking it off.

I haven't actually looked into that yet. Thank you for the advice. I yet to change my oil myself for the first time yet. Definitely something I will have to look at before I go through with anything.

You will need something that will go all the way into the bottom of the housing to pick up the inlet and outlet. Otherwise you will just be bypassing the filter all together. Never seen anything that will do that.

Curious why you need to change the original filter system? Seems to work fairly well.

To save money mostly, diesels are expensive enough as it is. Trying to cut cost wherever I can safely do so.

I was noticing that, I was planning on looking more into the Insane Diesel Bypass Oil Filter system. They do just that, obviously from the name. But I haven't been able to find a good video showing the parts and or how they work enough to see if they actually go to each port, the inlet and the outlet.

Per the Insane Diesel website, to make their oil bypass system work, you need to install an old Gen 2 oil filter. If a major company like that is insisting that you use a Gen 2 Mopar oil filter with their system, after all of their R&D, that leads me to believe that the speculation is correct and that in fact a Gen 2 oil filter will in fact work on the Gen 3 EcoDiesels.

I bought my filters for $25 each. I don’t understand the purpose of reusing a filter, especially at $25 every 10k miles (a year give or take). It seems like cleaning them would be more of a hassle than you’re saving

Okay so I just realized while going through this thread that I haven't posted what I'm about to do. From what I can tell the specs of everything I'm looking at doing matches up, but because I can't find exact dimensions of everything, my best bet at this point is to just go ahead with it and if it works it works, and if not I will just go back to the old OEM filter/cap setup for now.

So I believe I already stated that the oil filter and cap is made by UFI, a Chinese company and that UFI also makes the oil filter assembly as well. They make them for BMWs, Chevy models, Mercedes, Mopar, and a bunch of other European motor companies as well. I've looked up the assemblies for the Mercedes BMW and Mopar diesel housings, and they all look pretty much the same. Slight variations but not in the parts that matter.

So this is the assembly entrance I guess you could call it for the oil filter/cap on a third gen 1500 EcoDiesel.
Jeep Wrangler JL Oil Filter Cover Thread Size??? Screenshot_20230226-201137

Obviously we all know what this is.

This is the oil cap to a Mercedes diesel from the early 2000s which also fits into an earlier version of the same UFI oil filter assembly that's on the EcoDiesel Wrangler.
Jeep Wrangler JL Oil Filter Cover Thread Size??? s-l400

This is the 3-in HUBB oil filter in the M22x1.5 threading. Just so happens to be the exact same oil filter that will fit on my wife's Subaru Forester.

There's so many details in what I'm about to do that I could post like five, thousand word essays on all the details that I've learned. But the basics are that the Hubb oil filter unscrews from its casing, two screws on either side or removed, both inner and outer filters will hopefully slide successfully over the inner plastic piece on the Mercedes cap, and then the whole thing will screw into the oil filter assembly. If it all works successfully I won't have any oil pressure issues, if it doesn't work successfully, I'm out 20 bucks and I use the Hubb oil filter on my wife Subaru Forester. However if it does work, I never have to buy an oil filter for the EcoDiesel ever again. I will however have to buy those rubber o-rings from McMaster-Car in bulk. But that shouldn't be more than $10 total for 20 of ea.

I ran all this information by my dad about 20 minutes ago, he is the original gearhead in the family. He gave me his blessing said at this point the only way you're going to know if it works or not is if you try it. I can get the Hubb oil filter for about $70 with free shipping, and I can get the oil cap for the Mercedes for about $20 on Amazon, also with free shipping.

The main thing to keep in mind is that I don't see anything saying that this won't fit together perfectly, all the numbers seem to match up. However it successfully working without throwing any codes, that I won't know until I try.

This is the Dorman oil filter cover for the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 EcoDiesel...

After a lot of people's recommendations, I decided not to skimp out on the oil filter itself. Turns out K&N makes an oil filter for the older 3.0s. Only $14 on Amazon!!

So now the cost savings is complete. I'll probably order a second Dorman oil filter cover soon just in case I break the first one. According to the RAM forums, it's always good to have a second one on hand.

So after I have the initial two Dormans, which were $30 with shipping. $60 total if I have two. And another $60 for two five quart jugs of Pennzoil, Plus this $14 oil filter, I'll have an initial oil change cost of $134, with a reoccurring cost of $74 USD... Not bad!

Which o-ring causes low oil pressure? Both or the big one around the housing? Probably good idea to soak both in a little oil before final tightening?

Oh yeah, for sure! I was planning on doing that most definitely. I know the low pressure issue happens if you yank out the filter improperly, you can break the little locks at the top / bottom of the filter cap, so that's why I want to get a second one just in case. Everything I've read says pull straight out, don't twist it, just yank it straight out. It'll definitely be a bit of learning. At this point I'm only about 500 mi away from needing to do my oil change, but I might put it off for a thousand and just do it at 5,500.

Yeah 5000 sounds like a good number for changing also. Especially for people like me with low miles a year.

But yeah I was not sure which one they had issues with the little ring or the big oring.

I would assume the big ring, cuz the little ring is inside the oil area. The big ring is sitting there dry all day. So if you don't lube it up first, I could see it causing issues.
