This is the Dorman oil filter cover for the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 EcoDiesel...

After a lot of people's recommendations, I decided not to skimp out on the oil filter itself. Turns out K&N makes an oil filter for the older 3.0s. Only $14 on Amazon!!

So now the cost savings is complete. I'll probably order a second Dorman oil filter cover soon just in case I break the first one. According to the RAM forums, it's always good to have a second one on hand.

So after I have the initial two Dormans, which were $30 with shipping. $60 total if I have two. And another $60 for two five quart jugs of Pennzoil, Plus this $14 oil filter, I'll have an initial oil change cost of $134, with a reoccurring cost of $74 USD... Not bad!
I guess I forgot to post this. I had thought I did in this thread it might have been on my build page instead.

DO NOT CHEAP OUT ON THE OIL FILTER COVER, DO NOT BUY THE DORMAN COVER!!

PURCHASE AN OEM 2ND GEN ECODIESEL OIL FILTER COVER!!!

When I had first used the doorman oil filter cover, The k&n oil filters weren't snapping into place, like they are supposed to. I ended up gluing it in place with some industrial strength plastic glue, it held up just fine for that first oil change I did. But ended up having to purchase an OEM oil filter cap for the second gen EcoDiesel after making the Dorman one a one use with that glue.

The difference is a noticeable snap.

I thought I had bought two of them. Because if the tab inside goes to shit, you end up getting low oil pressure code thrown. So as it turns out I guess I bought three of them at the time one for the current use in the Wrangler EcoDiesel, and two more is backup in case that one breaks somewhere along the way. There's plenty of pointers on the Cherokee and the 1500 forums for how not to break them. It's very simple push it straight in and don't twist it, and then when you pull it out, pull it straight out and don't twist it. If you put it in on an angle or pull it out on an angle, you're likely to break the little tabs inside.

I purchased mine on Amazon because they are free shipping, they're normally $14.99 without tax, but a while back they had them on sale on Amazon for $10.99 each, so naturally I purchased 10 of them.

If you talk to Benny (@AllMoparParts.com) he might be able to help you out with free shipping, or some sort of discount to make it a little easier on your wallet.

Did you replaced with a 2gen oil housing that has built in bypass valve? The 3gen oil filter has the valve in the filter cartridge instead.

The second gen oil filters and caps do not have a bypass valve.

Honestly in my research I figured out that it doesn't really need it. It's a nice safety feature, but the vehicle runs just fine without it.

The difference between the second gen and third gen EcoDiesel oil filter assemblies and oil coolers is zero. I'm not 100% sure that they're interchangeable, but technology-wise they're the exact same. Simply adding a oil bypass within the filter only adds an extra safety feature. At the same time too though, you don't actually need it to have a healthy functioning engine. If you want it, you can have it, but you don't need it.

The bypass vavle is there incase the filter media clogged up.
I change my oil and filter every 5,000 mi, so if my filter media is getting clogged up, I got bigger problems. ;)

Interesting though. Appreciate the info. I honestly didn't really know what the bypass did.

Uhhhh, Yes and no.

If you switch to a 2nd Gen EcoDiesel Oil Filter and Oil Filter Cap setup like I did, then yeah you only have to switch out the oil filter every oil change.

However the 3rd Gen EcoDiesel oil filters which come with our diesel Wranglers, do not have removable filters.

So you'll have to go out and purchase a 2nd Gen EcoDiesel oil filter cap.

If you do order this from one of those websites where you're required to input what vehicle you have to make sure that it fits on your vehicle. Don't input your actual Wrangler. You'll need to input something like a 2016 RAM 1500 EcoDiesel (they have the 2nd Gen EcoDiesel's) or my personal favorite, 2017 Grand Cherokee Limited EcoDiesel.

At this point I've had zero issues with mine at 5000 mi. About to do my next oil change this week, I'll let you know how it goes.

Personally I like the idea of being able to switch out only the filter myself, because I'm a big fan of k&n, and I like their products, and I've always used their oil filters and air filters, and I've never had issues with them.

When it comes to purchasing budget versions of the third gen EcoDiesel oil filters, you're basically buying cheap knockoff versions of the Mopar one. At least if you do the second gen oil filter cap, you can go with brand name oil filters at an even lower price than the knockoff third gen oil filters cost.
It might take you like 10 or 12 oil changes to recuperate the cost of the second gen oil filter cap, but at that point you're in the green.

So after finally getting the Wrangler situated with a second gen EcoDiesel oil filter and oil filter cap setup, and it working perfectly with zero issues, I'm now thinking about testing another idea...

Jeep Wrangler JL Oil Filter Cover Thread Size??? 20210313_140815

Here is the inside of a 3.6L oil filter housing that I stole from a different thread.

This is the inside of a 3.0 EcoDiesel oil filter housing.

Jeep Wrangler JL Oil Filter Cover Thread Size??? Screenshot_20231029-012504-500

Here is the thread width of the 3.0 3rd/2nd Gen EcoDiesel oil filter cap. 79 mm.

Jeep Wrangler JL Oil Filter Cover Thread Size??? Screenshot_20231029-012040-446

The filter cap for a 2020 Wrangler 3.6L is pretty much the same, 3.15 in comes out to 80.01 mm, which is the same fudge factor issue I was running into with the second gen EcoDiesel oil filters. Some places were saying 80 mm wide, others were saying 79 mm wide..

Now obviously important point for this is going to be the hole at the bottom being 25 mm wide.

Jeep Wrangler JL Oil Filter Cover Thread Size??? Screenshot_20231029-012839-584

Measurement C in this case here is 23 mm wide which kind of makes me think that this isn't going to work, BUT...

Jeep Wrangler JL Oil Filter Cover Thread Size??? Screenshot_20231029-013039-187

Look how this guy here, not the lowest point on this 3.6L adapter, but the gasket right above it in that thicker piece. If the bottom piece is roughly 23 mm, that thicker piece might sit perfectly on top of the ~26 mm gap I have in the bottom hole of the EcoDiesel assembly...

Jeep Wrangler JL Oil Filter Cover Thread Size??? Screenshot_20231029-004205~3

First step here will be purchasing a 3.6L oil filter cap, and subsequent oil filter. While I highly doubt the 3.6L oil filter will fit into the EcoDiesel oil filter assembly, it's still worth a try. At minimum if the cap fits, there's a chance the Baxter Performance adapter might fit.

And hey, if it does fit in the end, I just solved the problem that EcoDiesel owners far and wide have been wondering for almost a decade now. ;) ?
