Woke up this morning to my back window like this. Checked security footage and doesn’t look like anyone tried to break in. Anyone know what may have caused this? It’s just an odd break given the long cracks around the edges along with the break in the middle.

If you live in a busy area, or one where there are a bunch of pre-teens/teens, I would look around the Jeep for a pellet or BB.

looks like it came form the inside. first thing does the other back window have a hole? and second is the vents in the back door blocked with something like the spare tire delete kit? Ive read a few people have had the back windows pop out when shutting a door.

Like @Maverick909 stated, you have to make sure the rear gate pressure vents are free and operational or once you shut a door it will create so much pressure it can certainly blow a window out like this.

I'm less inclined to think bb/pellet due the the amount of glass on the fender indicating that it burst outwards and the broken edges. That seems more like a temperature change related shatter. Could it have been in hot sun then rapidly cooled or cooled unevenly the evening before?

Did any of the neighbors have their yard done? String trimmers can through some small rocks with high velocity..

I also agree with the BB/pellet gun thing.

Also, check with the police and see if there was a shooting in the area. Bullets that miss their target gotta go somewhere.

Given the fail around the edges where it's bonded, and that it popped out, I'm with the others who think some type of temperature/pressure gradient.

Is your tailgate vent blocked? But if it happened when slamming a door, I'd tend to have thought you'd have noticed it. But if a loud door slam, especially on the passenger side, maybe not?

Those that mention the tailgate vent being blocked.......How does a tailgate table play into this? Its a mod I plan on doing but it ain't worth blowing out my windows.

Our Jeeps aren't built air tight enough to cause this even if the rear tailgate vent is blocked off. The air pressure will be expelled around the door seals, the rear hatch seal and the climate control vents.

The random exploding tempered glass window has been around a relatively long time throughout automotive and other applications.

Worked with my dad in the glass business during summer breaks. At one time I remember some Ford Granada door glasses exploding randomly. So, I helped install one of these tempered glasses and it was completed. Car was sitting in shade in the shop not moving. My dad says to stay away from the car and just watch it. So I did. I think less than ten minutes passed when the glass exploded. I remember him telling a guy on the phone at the warehouse to send another one because it blew up like the others did. Could not see an origin of a typical impact caused break either.

What was happening is there was a defect issue with the tempering, materials, handling or etc... Temperature was not the root cause nor a sudden jar or sudden air pressure from closing a door. change.

I know this doesn't relate 100% here about the exact cause of this side glass failure. I just wanted to clear up some things about tempered glass that most people are unaware.
