To play devil's advocate, if the tail light issues are intermittent it might be a wiring or electrical problem and not necessarily an issue with the tail light itself. Maybe that might be why they say they have to remove the side panels? I don't know much about how contemporary jeeps are wired. But I would imagine that most of the wiring would run underneath the vehicle or under the carpeting. Either way, maybe start with the fuse box and work your way back.
Perhaps. But a burnt or burning tail light is a wear and tear issue; a defective wiring harness is a warranty issue.

So for the dealer to say that they will need to remove the quarter panel without even knowing what is the cause is pretty disingenuous.

Yep. This isn't even the dealership I bought from. I knew they were crooked, so I tried another one. Now I know they're crooked, too.
Mike just saw a couple of your XR JL rock crawling with ease, well done! What you have under the hood a 3.6 Pen or a 2.0 Turbo and what transmission? Getting time for me to upgrade with a 2024 0r 2025. Thanks.. M

Anybody, like me, who has installed their own fuel door knows there's only one plastic screw (which you access from inside the Jeep) holding the taillight in place. Absolutely no need to remove a quarter panel.

Thanks! It's been an extremely impressive stock rig (mostly stock). I have the 3.6l eTorque with the auto trans. That was the only powertrain available on the Rubi XR when I ordered. No complaints. I had the 3.6ess with manual trans on my previous JL, and if Jeep properly fixes the clutch with this coming recall, I would be tempted to go back to manual if I were ordering another one. (Which I have PROMISED my wife I am not! I swear, honey, I'm not going to!! :D )

The intermittent issue is probably the taillight itself, or the harness plug right there at it. Should be pretty easy to diagnose, use another light to confirm.

Yeah, thanks - I think that makes sense, and certainly what I will try first if it goes out again. (It's actually been working pretty steadily for a couple of days now...)
