I see a lot of people on here have painted their muffler which is a great idea. I'd like to do mine too. Is the muffler easy to remove and paint? I know some people have painted it in place but I don't think I'd do that. I have very little luck being neat no matter how careful and preventive I am. Is there any prep I need to do to the Muffler? Do most people use a flat or gloss paint?

Thanks!

@Maddingo

No, you do not want to take off the muffler to paint it. You'd be taking the muffler off every say 6 months or so, as when you paint it, it needs to be repainted periodically to keep the thing looking good.

Anyway, time you learned to take the time to be neat... 8-) You can paint the muffler and tail pipe easily...

Get a couple of pieces of cardboard about 24" x 24" in size and use them to contain the black spray .... just squeeze the cardboard in front of the area you do not want painted/or hit with over spray.

Be sure to do bottom and two sides of the muffler and the tailpipe.

Best best is to wipe the muffler and tail pipe off with paint thinner, just prior to painting. THEN, start spraying very light coats of the paint. Do a few light coats, til you have good coverage and you will not have runs. IF, you see a run, just wipe the run away with a cloth and then respray that area. Will take you less then 20 min. to paint.

Do not do over your garage floor or cement driveway, unless you put down an old blanket, paper, plastic, etc.. Black over spray will mess up below the muffler if you don't put down paper, blanket, plastic.

I used to use cheapo Rustoleum Flat Black spray paint. I recently started using Rustoleum Flat Black BBQ spray paint (not the Ultra but the lower end price wise, BBQ paint)which costs about $3.65 a can at the Home Depot. I get a good 6 months out of the paint job before I opt to freshen it up a bit.

My pet peeve so to speak is seeing a friggin Wrangler with a shiny, unpainted muffler and tali pipe hanging down. It looks like shit..

Had a pretty good day, shot 78, I don’t break 80 that often, so I enjoyed today.

I would end up getting paint on everything. My Mojito would be sprinkled with black dots. My nice red shocks would also be sprinkled.
It's so easy a caveman could do it. Dated reference. Wrap plastic bags around them pretty red shocks...lay down some newspaper. There so much you can do to prevent making a mess. It's more work to remove & paint, and maintain afterwards; it ain't a one-and-done thing. I hope you manage to get it done one way or the other.

Just ask @cosine he knows!
When I took my muffler off (replaced it w/ Dynomax muffler delete), only took about 10 minutes or less to remove the 4 hanger bolts and pipe clamp bolt. I think it would take longer to cover up items that you don't want painted, and you can get every bit of the muffler painted that way (and no chance of getting paint on something you hadn't intended to paint :)

If you try to remove the muffler by removing the pipe clamp and trying to pry it off the rubber hangers I'd imagine that would be much harder.

FWIW I used RustOleum BBQ paint on my G37 muffler cans and it held up real well.

Paint the muffler? wtf. and lol.
Yup .... commonly seen ..... it is something that many guys/gals that wash their Wrangler and clean the inside of their Wrangler's and maintain their Wrangler's, also find themselves doing.

Mostly applicable to those Jeep owner's that tend to be particular about the way they look, that take pride in their personal appearance. Also, should throw in, it is especially applicable, to those Wrangler owner's that are OCD.
