Hawaii is famous for red staining mud. I crawl through the mud and avoid it as much as possible and pressure wash my JLR as soon as I get home. The 3,300 PSI washer takes of 99% of the mud, but I still end up with many small stains. I've tried every type of solvent and what works best is a good car washing soap and a microfiber towel, but that takes 15 minutes of intense elbow grease to remove a 1/4" by 2" stain. I'm going to try a buffer and compound. The Buffing Compound recommendation? thread is looking for a compound for small smudges and scratches I want to buff out.

I was thinking of using microfiber and foam pads and the least abrasive possible compound, but maybe just soap and a wool pad would work best.

I misread your question, for light scratches you can get away with glazes below
Both of these will take care of it, for harder areas the 3m will blend that nicely
https://www.amazon.com/3M-39007-Hand-Glaze-16/dp/B0002NUNIO?th=1
I also like to use https://www.amazon.com/Mothers-01716-Ceramic-Polish-Coat/dp/B07YSW49LT
For tougher scratches and really needing to work the paint buffing and using a buffer
https://www.amazon.com/3M-Perfect-Rubbing-Compound-36060-6PK/dp/B00DCMM48E
then followed by the one of the glazes above etc then wax..

NC has similar mud. Nothing will remove these stains. Years of pressure washing, scrubbing, wiping, UV exposure, etc. and my JK left me with mud stains in the plastic that it received 10 years prior. Save your money and time and figure out how to be zen with it, IMO.

What is in the mud? I know a lot of the red/orange mud up in Minnesota, for example, is rich in iron which gives it the color. I use an iron remover to get it out and it works great.

As I said, elbow grease works and gets it all out. I was looking for something faster. My 3,300 PSI power sprayer removes 97% of it.

You want to get some iron remover detailing spray. That will pull it out of the paint.

Iron is a likely culprit, but shipping to Hawaii is too much to test this approach
