Looking for feedback on mounting the ghost antenna. I've seen a few options to mount this near the cowl. Any specific mount that works or other locations?

Got a fender mount from Topsy Products. I also got their mike mount, which I love.

Cowl mount from Cooltech as well. The hood is the best option as it’s metal vs the fiberglass hard top.

If you trail amongst trees or close quarters, side mounts are risky. I slapped mine on the front bumper behind the bull bar. It gets good range, doesn’t expose coax to engine bay heat, is hard to notice for thieves and is protected as long as I don’t lose my bumper. (Look under the headlight, driver’s side of the bumper)

I don't believe there is a perfect spot to mount any antenna on a Jeep - everything is a compromise. Ideally, you'd want it as high as possible with a metal ground plane at least 12" in diameter.

Our roof is not only fiberglass but removable so I think the best you could do is epoxy a piece of metal to the top and use an antenna with a magnetic mount. Of course, range would suffer when you take the roof off and stick it to the roll bar because you'd lose the ground plane.

The only other reasonably large flat piece of metal we have is the hood. I did see an install with the antenna in the middle of the hood but that kinda looks like the car in Idiocracy.

If you go with a cowl mounted antenna you're ground plane is above and to the side which I imagine has a significant affect the radiation and receive pattern.

On the front bumper is a nice spot I hadn't seen before, but I imagine it would behave similarly to cowl mounted but in a different direction.

Range really wasn't a big concern for me either since we're usually in eyesight of other vehicles we're with.

Anyway, that's some of the thought process I was going through and was planning on using a cowl mount that I had bought.

Then found stuff specific to the diesel engine compartment that would make it really hard to go through the firewall. That's when I decided to go to the rear on the roll bar. So anybody near DFW is welcome to a cowl mount if they want it. : )
