Has anyone filed a claim under such a policy? I've got one with Geico, $10/mo and have their exclusions (very limited) in writing. Sounds essentially identical to an Extended Warranty type deal.

The only things mine doesn't cover is:

  • regular maintenance (balancing, filters, oil, bake pads, tires, etc),
  • per-existing conditions (which is unlikely as the policy is only offered for new vehicles within their first 15mo of ownership and under 15k miles - I added this to my policy within the first 2k miles), and
  • repairs made necessary by intentional damage. The last bit they tried to include stuff that happens because of "off-roading" but I can get around that (which there is more to say on what that is considered here in KY under my Geico policy - StateFarm and Nationwide were not so flexible in their contract language).

Other limits include the $250 deductible ($50 for glass repair) and it is only 7y 100k miles. But at $10/mo that's $840 for the entire coverage and is much less than any extended warranty.

I don't know about Geico but I can tell you about Amica.
I called Amica and made it very clear to them we use the Jeep for what it was built for. They confirmed I am covered for off road damage HOWEVER they cautioned me about filing a bunch of claims (say for bumps and scrapes) because it will raise my rates.
Within the year I cooked my rear axle while wheeling. They cut me a check for $3800 after appraising eh damage and voila, I now have D44s with lockers on my wife's Sahara.
My rate did jump $400 a year I believe but if you do the math I came out way ahead since the rate should slowly come back down with clean record.
The important thing is I was covered.

After-market warranties can sometimes be great, the only problems you really have to worry about are, number 1, the company going bankrupt because no company, no claims paid, I wouldn't expect this to be a problem with Geico. Number 2, that company having a maximum payout on their repairs, for example, some companies will only cover repairs up to x dollar amount, so if you have some major components failing that cause major repairs you could have to pay the remainder out of pocket,. Number 3, having to deal with the company saying yes this component is covered under warranty, however, because this component failed because of that component which isn't covered under warranty this component won't be either.

If you're interested in a true manufacturer extended warranty you can take a look at Mopar warranties, it's the only official, factory-backed warranty that you can purchase for your jeep.

None of those apply to a Mechanical Breakdown Insurance policy (add-on to main insurance policy). As I stated, the only things are not covered are in the OP. I am assuming similar restrictions exist on Extended Warranties (i.e. you don't change your oil at acceptable intervals then your blown engine isn't covered).

ETA: it boils down to risk:cost:benefit. A $2-3k Extended warranty vs $840 insurance rider vs likelihood the fine print in either will exclude what you reasonably expect to be covered.

In my experience courts are less favorable to insurance companies when there is a coverage dispute, so given how little Geico has published and combined with their emails I'd have better luck arguing something like illusory coverage rather than a breach of contract/warranty with an extended warranty. Just speculation, it's why I'm asking. I haven't seen hardly any posts on people actually benefiting from an extended warranty but have seen plenty of posts of people's insurance policies paying for damage on and off-road (here and other social media). That's what got me thinking about this insurance add-on

That is correct, if a part fails either because of wear and tear OR corrosion it isn't covered under warranty. Some things such as the emissions system, the battery, e-torque system, (if your vehicle has it), are also not covered outside of the manufacturer warranty specifically placed on those parts.

I will say the Max Care warranty on your website does seem enticing. I'm considering it since it clearly states:

" WHAT’S NOT COVERED UNDER OUR MAXIMUM CARESM PLANSThe only parts and labor not covered:
• Maintenance services and items used in such services
• Wear items (such as tires, manual clutch assembly, brake pads, shoes, rotors, drums, belts and wipers)
• Snow plows, winches and trailer hitches
• Body and paint items, including soft trim
• Glass and plastic lense "
