If this was a TJ, CJ or older, the trans swap would be simple and makes sense given the scarcity and/or sentimental value of the vehicle.

You can throw a rock and hit dozens of JL/JLU auto trans examples and swapping one vehicle for another is cheaper. If you owe on the vehicle the swap is a financial challenge beyond the scope of advice on the Internet.
It's a more complicated situation. The subject jl is damaged and being acquired discounted for the damage, as is. The clutch issue is incidental. He'll likely just fix the damage and address the clutch issue quickly to get it on the road again.

3 on the tree in high school.…you learned to shift left handed while you steered with your knees to keep your arm around your girlfriend. Probably looked dumb, but you know priorities. I chuckle when these young whippersnappers act like driving a manual is some kind of badge of honor. We were poor and didn’t have anything else and didn’t know any better.
Most modern-day manual enthusiasts come from the sports car side of things though, vs old manual trucks. Fairly different crowds.

Yeah I owned 911s. I would not buy a sports car with an auto trans. I dont see the value in a Jeep though. Especially the reportedly craptastic setup in the JL. Hard pass.

And here, I thought I was still modern-day, until I was pushing up daisies.

Yeah the JL's manual... nah. I think it'd be a tougher choice if the Jeep could be had with a good manual.

If I wanted to enjoy something sporty on a windy road with a manual, a Jeep isn’t what I picture. Rowing one offroad doesn’t appeal to me. I guess I’m just lazy.

It's less rowing your own and more making the Jeep listen to you without having to jump through the hoops the auto has. The 8 speed is a fantastic transmission, but Jeep's software setup is kind of a pain in some specific conditions.

In order for the Jeep to not cut power, at least with the 2.0, you have to be in manual gear select mode, regardless of whether you're in offroad + or not and regardless of what gear you're in. If you leave it in drive and require wheel speed, there is a point it'll cut power for driveline preservation, and it's so incredibly conservative on what that point is. Such a pain point on harder stuff, feels like the point they pick is always right when you're just starting to gain traction.

Well, then there's the part about the manual trans... in order for the clutch not to cut your fuel line or your foot off... But both of the configurations suffer the nanny torque limiting BS.

Truth. That's why I say if it was a *good* manual it'd be a harder decision for me. As it sits now, there's zero competition IMO, the 8 speed is too good 99% of the time.

Yup. I am impressed with the 8 speed every time I drive it
