Just ask @cosine he knows!
You can still add the transfer case and rubi axles much cheaper.
Yep, I'm getting that RocTrac T-case for my sport, I don't need the better gears for the road, but off road that 4:1 is much more important to me :)

I learned that the hard way, went through two JLs before I ended up with a JLUR. What a difference the transfer case makes!

No way. Buy new axles + transfer case + locker switches + sway bar disconnect. I'm probably missing something. Then pay the labor and all your time selling the factory axles + xfer case. You end up with no warranty on the drive train. You might save a few pennies if you like to work for free and don't consider your time valuable.

That 4:1 is amazing when crawling.

Yup, and the lockers too.

Way, just did it. For everything but the sway bar you can do it for 8k. Then sell the sports for 1k or keep them.

Again, if you plan on building one out, it is substantially cheaper this way, and the warranty doesn’t mean anything once you plan on building one.

Long list of features that come with a Rubicon. Alpine sound system, AUX switches, leather everything...I pissed away so much money thinking I can mod a cheap Jeep and be happy...

No sway bar and I have factory warranty on my JLR with 2.5" RK lift, 38x13.5R17 Nitto s on bead locks. I kept stock wheels & tires for safety inspection and going to the dealer.

Build a JLU Sport S vs. Buy JLU Rubicon? Pros and Cons?

71.5% say Rubi all the way.

And you forgot the Rubicon stickers :)

Im not sure what you’re trying to say there.

The point is, Rubicons are great and for most will be all they need. But to say buying a rubicon is financially the better option ā€œperiodā€ is just not correct at all. Especially when you consider it can be a 15-25k difference. Thats a whole lot of cash to add just the aspects of a Rubi that you want.

Whats 10k? You said yourself, you can get a jlur for 55k. I paid 40 for a sport altitude. Add everything but the swaybar for 8k. Still have 7k left for lift, tires, etc. if you want the painted roof then buy that for 2k. In the end you still have the Rubi upgrades and then some. In my case, I went way past a rubi for the same price of a rubi.

You can't get the front camera in a sport. I'm buying a 2023 JLR because I followed the bad advice on this forum when I ordered without it. Front camera is super helpful when crawling. My crappy aftermarket camera is so inferior to the factory.

Where do you get a factory painted roof for $2K. And no camera. I paid $41K for my JLR.

Marketplace.

You can add the trail cam for less than $200.

You’re comparing your price of a JLR to the price of a JLUR.

I get that it worked for you and thats great but to state that it is never better to build it rather than buy a Rubi is just factually wrong. Ive shown you multiple times why and how.

I dont really want to keep derailing this thread so we’re just going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

You can't, why do you think I'm buying a new JLR? because with the 7" screen, you can't add the good factory camera.

72% disagree with you.

You get a ton more things than the axles, lockers, switches
Bigger tires, Bigger uConnect and you can get the essential camera.
Factory warranty on drive train is valuable.

If you want Rubi axles, lockers, sway bar - then buy a Rubi.
If you're going to put Dana 70's like I plan for my next build, you can save a bit with the Sport. Even so, I'm going with a JLR or JLUR next year to build up.

Why didnt you just buy the 8.4 and add the camera? Would have cost you less than $1000.

You can also keep the factory warranty on adding rubi axles if you do it through the dealer. The cost for the axles, lockers and install was 6k. I posted it on here when the dealer quoted it. You can also keep the warranty if you go with ultimates.

My sport is direct proof that is not the case.

Sport Altitude price 10/19/2021: $40,300
Total Mods: just under $24,000

Substantially built over a Rubi.

Price of the cheapest Rubi on the lot the day of purchase, $63,000. Still would need all the steering upgrades, axle upgrades, lift, tires etc.

If you have the funds available, building out a lower base model will always make more sense if you plan to build out a Jeep.
If you’re just throwing some tires on, it is. For the money, spending 3-4K more on a Rubicon would have been cheaper for me in the long run. My M200 will take what I’ll throw it it for a long time but starting with stock Rubicon axles & suspension would have been less expensive.

If you’re gonna do KOH, sure…start with a Sport. You can sell the Rubicon parts though to offset some costs.

I can get the Roc Trac T-case for $800, like I mentioned the Sport 3.45 gears are poor, but when going 4Lo at a 4:1 reduction it's much closer to a Rubicon w/ 4.1.

I like that option much better than plunking down $2500 for gears and still having that 2.7:1 Sport T-case. Your crawl ratio is the same running a 3.45 w/ the 4:1 RocTrac as it is running 5.13s w/ the Sport 2.7:1 T-case. And another bonus is you're not putting any additional money into the smaller M186 or M200 axles.

My M186 w/ the Torq locker and my soon to be installed M220 w/ LSD combined w/ that RocTrac will be all I need, even w/ my 35s :) I don't need lower gears in 2wd, my 8AT has plenty of range IMO.

I think if I were to ever regear it would only be w/ M210 M220 setup.

Only coin I think I will add to the M186 is Synergy or Teraflex ball joints.
