Y'all are crazy. There is a gear for every speed. This isn't an auto - you might need to just leave it in gear for a bit. I definitely am not shifting and searching for a gear all the time. The road is 25mph? Leave it in 2nd the entire time. You can use the entire rev range. I just recently went to the Tennessee mountains and through all those roads I just left it in 3rd gear and still averaged 19mpg.

You just have to hold off and shift at higher revs - closer to 3,000 RPM. That means staying in 2nd up to 30-35. I usually shift to 4th between 50-55. That keeps it in the power zone so why not?

I won't shift my Sahara into 5th below 70 mph because the RPM's drop below 2,000, and as most of you have experienced, there is no torque below 2K. It took some getting used to as my previous manual trans cars all had better gear ratios. 70+ for 5th gear and 80+ for 6th. If you leave it in 4th on the highway, you can rest your hand on the shifter.

I'm sorry to say this but here goes. I'm retired from the trucking industry in the million +++ miles over the years I have only owned 2 vehicles with an auto trans an FX4 4x4 Ford I bought to haul a sailboat and a 2018 JLU Sahara. All new cars and trucks even class 8 trucks are designed to operate at lower rpm . I know from experience because I had to relearn my shirt points in my Eaton 13 speed in my Peatrebilt. It just seemed ass backward to pull a hill's at such low rpm but It worked. I have not driven a 3.6 manual but my 2.0 8speed just blows my mind at what it can do at low rpm. 70mph@ 1600 and shifting is seamless. I think the days of the manual are numbered. Just my 2 cents

Manuals work great combined with high-revving n/a engines. It's just counter-intuitive to drive a SUV like it's a Miata, but that's how FCA saw fit to gear/tune the 6MT JL.

Personally, I think the 2.0L is probably a better fit for the 6MT than the 3.6L. A 2.0t+tall 6MT is a great combo in my GTI; you can rip up to 60 in 2nd gear, or accelerate up a hill in 6th gear. It's very forgiving on shift points; sometimes I'll accidentally shift into 6th at like 40 MPH, and it'll still accelerate just fine from like 1300 RPM.

I'm hoping Ford offers a MT with the 2.3L (or please Dear Lord Baby Jesus, the 2.7L) on the Bronco. If the Mustang is any indication, that'll be a killer combo.

I gotta think the Diesel with the 6-speed would be the ticket - if only....

I had a Jetta Sportwagen TDI 6-speed, and you could short shift that all day. Great combo.

It's pretty simple. A diesel with turbo especially and a turbo gas engine can be tuned to make lots of torque at lower rpms. The normally aspirated small displacement in a heavy vehicle 3.6 just won't perform well at low rpms. The computer and auto take care of all that for us. If you want a manual, your manual computer needs to be trained to drive the Jeep in the power and needed for whatever task is being asked. It takes some effort. But it is fun most of the time, and I am distracted less, because I have to drive my jeep more deeply

I don't understand why people keep harping at this. I don't know why so many in this thread seem to want to keep their engine under 2k rpm. Why are you even trying? This 3.6 motor is optimum between 2-2.5k rpm. If you are traveling 70mph in 5th gear you are at exactly 2k rpm with the 3.45 gears in the sport model. I average 24mpg on the highway at 70. It seems like people are saying low rpm = better mpg. When in reality it is engine optimum rpm = best mpg & performance. It doesn't matter what x, y, and z cars and trans can do. This motor and trans likes 2-3k rpm. Keep it there. You get great performance, buttery shifts, and great mpg (for a Jeep). There is nothing to complain about.

There are like 4 current threads going that all basically say “my off-road vehicle doesn’t drive like the GTI/Si/Miata that I’m used to so it sucks.”

The manual in the JL is the best manual any Wrangler has ever had. Go drive an ‘18 JK on a dealer lot and that fact will become immediately evident.

I'm hoping for the 2.7tt, that would be OP

It may have the best feeling manual, but possibly the worst gear ratios and oem tune. I can not recommend a manual JL wrangler to anyone. I never thought I would support the purchase of a traditional automatic over a manual, but for a JL the auto is the only way to go. Sad, really.

You seem to be the only one with that opinion. I absolutely love it.
