I just picked up my new JL Rubicon a few days ago and am already hearing a strange whine during acceleration. When the whine first started, it was very quiet so I didn't think anything of it. Today, the whine is extremely loud and occurs every time I accelerate and am at higher RPMs. The best way to describe the noise is when you reverse extremely fast... the whine of the gears spinning quickly is very similar to the noise I hear each time I accelerate normally in Drive.

I originally thought it could just be a wet belt or something to that effect, however, even after letting the car sit for a day the noise is still present and just as prominent.

Has anyone experienced this whining noise or know what it could possibly be? I am really hoping it is not something with the transmission since the car is only a week old.
So did we find the solution to this? My 2018 jl just started this exact same thing?

2018 JLU Sport S (3.6, 8 spd auto) here w/ 18,000 mi. I began hearing this about a year ago but it seems to be more noticeable now. Happens during most accelerations from a full-stop. I also tested this in M-mode, both starting from M1 and M2 and noticed the noise. Hoping someone on here has updates!

Hi iflyimpilot and Gallaspie,

As Jasmine previously mentioned, we do recommend that you have this checked out by your local Jeep dealer. If you are in need of additional assistance while your Jeep is in service, please send our team a private message.

Yikes! I just bought a used 2018 JLSU yesterday. Test drove it a few days ago and did not hear the whine I'm hearing this morning as I accelerate from 2nd to 3rd gear. It sounds slightly similar to what my old VW Golf 1.8T turbo intake sounded like. But the VW intake sounded sexy. The whine coming from my JL is soooo annoying and I cannot un-hear it now. Has anyone been able to get this fixed?

Just fyi in case it helps someone ... my 2018 JLU Rubicon with 66,000 miles developed a loud whine at all speeds over last few months. As long as the vehicle was moving, i heard it. It seemed to get louder with higher speeds. And it was definitely louder recently vs. a month ago.

Took it to dealer and they diagnosed this as coming from the alternator. They replaced that, and a couple pulleys, "upper" and "idler" pulleys i believe (but don't quote me) and the whine is gone. $1,000

i have 3.6 engine.

I am going to add mine to this thread. I have been dealing with it for about a year now. Dealership says nothing is wrong.
Mine sounds more high pitched. To me my noise is the transmission. I am convinced it is. High pitched whine only when driving that follows the rpms and changes with each shift.
Maybe I am wrong and it is not the transmission. I really hope it is not but I wish someone could tell me what it is and how to get rid of it because it is getting annoying.
You can hear it outside the Jeep when it drives by also.
Man if I have to give a lot of gas or floor it to pass someone or something it is really loud.

My dealership said no codes and and cannot find anything wrong.
It is bothering me so bad that I went out again this past weekend looking and checking everything I could think of.

It only makes the sound in gear and driving. More RPMs the louder it is.

Sounds like turbo spooling.
Mine does the same. I wouldn't worry about it.

Dropped mine off this morning, they were immediately able to replicate. To me it sounds like possibly a belt, maybe the tensioner. But do your point @Kev84 , I didn't realize how loud it was on the outside until I heard the service guy drive away.

Mine didn't always do this. I was 20 some thousand miles in when it started.

The thing that worries me about it is that I had a coating of fluid all over the underneath of my jeep and told service dept about it and they said it was because last service they spilled oil when changing it.
Not buying that now. I think it is the trans has been leaking slightly.

My dealer said it's the gasket, and are replacing it..... hopefully that does the job.

So they replaced the gasket, but the noise is still there. They are saying it's normal.... never heard another Jeep sound like that, and why replace the gasket if it's "normal".

I had a similar noise that was bugging me for a while. It sounded like a turbo spooling up but I have the 3.6L. Turns out one of the zip ties for my winch ground had broken and the cable was just barely rubbing along the belt. It didn't rub when the vehicle was parked/idle, but forward movement was enough to cause the cable to shift rearward and start making contact with the belt.

Probably not the same thing most here are experiencing, but something worth sanity checking and easy to rule out.

So a little update on that turbo whine.

I took my Jeep the dealer for something else today, and casually mentioned that I had a fairly prominent turbo whine. The tech who took a look at it, said that bits of the turbo fins probably got damaged and is either scraping or changing the dynamics of air inside, creating that whistling noise.

So, he went ahead and ordered a new turbo for me. Parts due to arrive in mid May.

Will update back with results.

Took a recording of the turbo whine for anyone interested:

unfortunately I am now also a member of this club. 15K miles on my 2019 3.6 and the wine is getting more and more noticable.

As with others, it is most prominent when under heavy acceleration, high RPMs, going up a hill. at only 15K .. i certainly was not expecting motivation for a hemi swap this early on.

Anyone have any idea's?
