I purchased a 4Xe with 13,000 miles on it and a still getting familiar with the quarks versus my 3.6L Wrangler. After 1000 miles of ownership I still can't understand why sometimes it is so loud at idle and sometimes during normal driving. I thought it might be the colder winter temps were causing it but even recent warm weather did not changle anything.

I was looking for a pattern that the loudness was more obvious.. But I can not determine a pattern. The engine sounds like it's high revving but it's not. After watching YT videos and searching the forum it is my understanding that the 4Xe has noises for coolants and other fluid/battery related items. Is this normal or should I take it in to the dealer for a check. Thanks in advance.

It's really just a loud engine. Usually extra noisy at cold start- almost sounds like a diesel. Once I'm driving, I don't notice it.

On cool mornings mine sounds like a lawnmower engine dying in a desperate attempt to move over 2 tons, but that quickly goes away. Once its warmed up, then it's a surprisingly quiet little engine sometimes I can barely tell when it powers on. Either that, or my hearing is worse than I thought.

If yours is unusually loud even when at operating temps, maybe try recording it for us? There could be something wrong with it, or perhaps you're just used to or expecting it to sound a bit different.

I was wondering if I could load a sound bite. It is very quiet almost all the time but the few times it is loud your description is similar to what we experience. I will try to load the sound bit.

The diesel sound is what I almost wrote but I wanted to see how others would describe the sound and not poision opinions. But sometimes the noise stays for extended periods while drive and it is exactly like the diesel sound.

What kind of RPM's are you seeing when it's so loud?

Mine's so loud at idle sometimes that I've seen people nearby stop and stare, thinking something was wrong. Usually happens on a cold start, or when the engine has been 'off' for awhile in EV mode and switches back on. I guess it is trying to make up for the silence when it is in all-electric mode? :CWL:

Direct injection engines are significantly louder at idle than port injection engines. Nature of the beast.

Very normal. Those engines warm the oil up to operating temps. Very normal for 4xe

I find that the sound is more in your face in the 1500-2200 RPM range when cold and not really stepping on the pedal, kinda like coasting after an acceleration. the sound is kinda clanky, like valve slap or something. usually when unloaded When stepping on it or above 3k RPM and actually putting a load on it its pretty dang quiet.

Still drives me fucking nuts even after a year of owning

Mine has been loud in one moment and then super quiet in another. There are times when the engine comes on and I didn't even notice it until I looked at the dash and saw the RPM's up. There are other times when it sounds like a jet engine.

I had read somewhere else that the engine will rev to get up to temp, one of the hundreds of things the computer is checking. But aside from that, yeah there are times it is loud, but I don't think it is "louder" than a regular engine, but probably more high pitched so it is more noticeable.

Sounds like, pun intended, that mine is normal and that we just need to get used to it.
