4XE Revs on idle

I’m sure this is normal but can someone please help me understand why it happens. I have the jeep 4XE, when I sit idle the RPMs will jump up to 2 for awhile and then back down every few minutes. I’ve noticed it does this when my batttery hits 0 miles while I’m driving as well. Is this to keep it at the 15% that we can’t see? Thanks in advance!

I've never had much idle since it usually turns off the ice below a certain speed. But the 4xe operate as a series and parallel hybrid, so it can do this when you are moving.

I don't remember where I saw/read it (Chris Hall interview with Dan Frye maybe?), but when the ICE starts for the first time on a trip, it is run at a particular rpm for 1 minute to warm the catalytic converter to the correct temperature.

My search for the original reference turned up that this is also done on the 2.0L model, and may be done on most vehicles. It is just not as noticeable on those since it happens as part of startup compared to happening much later in the trip on the 4xe.

@Alexandraross ICE stands for Internal Combustion Engine - in the 4xe, it’s the 2.0 liter gas engine portion of the overall hybrid propulsion system.
