I have reached the point where I want to have a separate set of off-road tires. I use the Jeep as a daily driver and want tires that behave well on pavement, but I also attend Jamborees and want the performance of a dedicated off-road tire for those events. I’m not looking for anything fancy—just an inexpensive, durable wheel rim to mount the off-road tires.

A couple specific questions:
- Should I choose steel or aluminum wheels for this purpose?
- Do you have any specific recommendations or personal experience to share?

I don’t need tire recommendations right now (though I’ll gladly accept them), I’m mainly looking for direction on economical, durable rims.
Thanks in advance for your feedback — much appreciated.

You didnt mention bead lock wheels. Or wheel size. The old-school argument is steel wheels are cheaper and flex when on trails, they dont crack. Many steel wheels have been repaired with simple force and leverage to make sure the bead seal is fine. Aluminum wheels are thicker and could crack on hard impacts which cannot be field repaired.

Method 316s, light and can be found for fairly cheap. I wheeled them for several years without any issues before getting some bead grips.

some of the best wheels for the money are from quadratech...OEM look but 8.5 wide with proper backspacing/offset....I know some think steel is great but try pounding this back in shape...I have never damaged a cast wheel bad enough to have to change it on the trail...

KMC, Raceline, Trailready, Method, Fuel all good brands. I'm partial to Raceline & Trailready (I've run the latter on my JK since 2012), but the others will give you great results and long service life. Cheap wheels are exactly that. Along with lift components & tires, this isn't a place to cheap out.
