As the title implies, I didn't listen to those wiser than I and bought a cheapy fuel filter for my 3.0 diesel. It was actually just bought as a spare to carry on trips, but I was out of the good ones, so I grabbed this out of my supply to install. When I tried to seat the filter on the screw-on base, the mount itself popped off and fell into the filter. I fished it out, but there was no way to get it back on securely. I tried to slide the broken piece onto my mount to see what caused the problem and no go - the bore was way too small.
Luckily I hadn't started the fire on the used filter yet, so I pulled it from the pile and reinstalled it. Dang it.
I'm glad I hadn't been relying on this out in the field - if it was put on in an emergency and failed, I'd have been left high and dry.
