I've always found KBB to be an accurate representation of the price I've actually received when selling my vehicles. Two interesting observations on appraising my 24,000 mile, excellent condition, tastefully modified JLURD:
  • I bought the Jeep for 5% below invoice, and KBB says that it's still worth 80% of what I paid. 72% if I count the $6K in mods that I've done. I assume that the mods were worth "zero" in my valuation.
  • For fun, I then entered the mileage as "15 miles", to emulate a vehicle that was purchased new, shrink-wrapped, and stored for five years. My appraisal only went up by less than $3K. Moral: uber-low mileage doesn't buy you much - drive 'em guys.

Kelly blue book list my 23 with 9000 miles for ~38000. The dealer has a 2025 for 56000. Probably 58 otd. Lol

I feel like $3k is pretty substantial. Considering it's pretty likely that you will owe some amount of money on your trade (if it's still worth a decent amount), that's $3k added to the difference between your trade-in value and what you owe, which is likely to be the down payment on your next purchase. This is how those of us who were not lucky enough to start off with vehicle/house-sized gifts from mom and dad work our way to being vehicle-debt free.

This is also ignoring the fact that if you decide to sell privately, that $3k is probably more like $5k, and low mileage vehicles sell so much faster.

So I disagree. I mean, I don't say "park it in the garage and leave it", but managing mileage is important to me.

KBB does low ball estimations more for auto dealers than owners.

Insurance uses comparible/actual sale prices for totaled vehicle valuations because KBB is known to be gamed.

so I was just kicking around trading my 2024 jlur and going off KBB my trade said between $42,451-46830. that was putting everything in as oem ie leather etc as it came from the dealership. I have AEV wheels, mickey thompson 35's (low miles) as I run two sets of wheels and tires. 14000 miles on the jeep AEV 2.5 lift warn winch and mopar steel bumper...Dealer offered $40,000 but that I had to leave all the modifications on..I made the mistake of sending photos of it and I told them I was planning on putting it back to stock before trading. The salesman told me that $40,000 was an awesome deal for me.. there is not a scratch on my rig. I declined.

I have the exact same wheels/tires. That's what meant by "tastefully" modified. I differentiate between best-of-breed parts, like AEV, and mismatched parts found on Craigslift. I know that it's a bit snobbish, but I chuckle when I think of the finetuning that goes into engineering an AEV lift versus someone who cheaps out by bolting on random take-off parts. Especially when the recipient is an EcoDiesel like mine that comes from the factory carrying an extra 300 lbs on its nose and clearly needs to account for that weight - the equivalent of an offensive lineman sitting on the hood.

Question on forum: "Hey, my neighbor is selling the suspension from his 3.6 Rubicon X, will it fit on my JLURD? I can get the whole setup for $250!"
Reply from forum: "Yeah, why not? It'll bolt right up!"
Question a month later: "Why is the front end of my EcoDiesel 3" too low? I used factory parts" :)

Adds, unless they also come as options, are basically zero added value, and could, most likely depreciate value.

Best way to see what a car is worth, carvana, or carfax, and see what they will offer you. They were within hundreds of what dealer gave me.

The resale of my 2020 jlurd tanked in the past few years.
When my 2016 jlur was totalled, I got 33k back. It was 90k+ miles. 6 years old.
My 2020, 95k miles, 5 years old, I got offered 25k. Wtf

Six years puts that $33K at 2022, when the lingering effects of Covid on inflated market valuations were still in play. Maybe that's the related context here.

My latest offer from a dealer was low with the usual line about "Sorry for the low offer, we do really poorly with Wranglers, they're everywhere, and they're hard to sell!" By the end of the conversation about trading it for a new pickup, I'm usually about $9k farther in my favor, about $4k-ish on the trade before the trade tax credit and another $4k-ish off an already discounted truck. Trading a two year old Wrangler isn't going to be a good value overall, but dealers are getting soft on the price of new stuff. It ain't selling like it used to.

It's really less tricky than you think. #1: For Dealers. Heads they win, Tails you lose. #2: Active free market, fair price - you sell in 7 - 10 days. Inactive market, unfair price - you don't sell, or sell and lose 20%.

Carvana offers $26K for my '23 Sport S 2-door with 18K miles on it. Looks like I will be upside-down for a while yet. Glad I'm in it for the long haul. :)

KBB says $18,910.00 trade value.
Carvana will buy it today for $20,600.00.

The latter is certainly easier. My Jeep is 98% stock, so removing the few odds & ends that I'd want to sell later would be a light lift.

I've no plans to sell or trade the vehicle, but threads like this one do pique my curiosity.
just checked carvana and actually is better than the dealer offer because I could put it back to stock and keep my lift wheels, bumper winch etc but not enough to motivate me...they offered $39600.

I never look at the value. Buy it, upgrade it, enjoy it, use it until it’s worthless. Repeat, retire, RIP
Normally I do that, but seems I picked the wrong engine for this (ecodiesel).
Having seen many ram trucks with the 3.0 go 250k miles, I thought it was a good choice.
