Just Another Koons Plug

So I picked up my Sahara from Koons yesterday. Everything went super smooth and I would recommend the experience, especially given my locale.

I'm walking distance from the commuter rail road that gets people from suburban Westchester Co., North of Manhattan, into Manhattan's Grand Central Station.

Once there, a quick hop of the NYC Subway got me to Penn Station and Amtrak, which got me to Union Station in DC, from where I took the DC Metro to the Greensboro, VA station and walked (although I could have taxied it) to the dealership.

Everything went smoothly. The Wrangler was ready, Craig Benner was super nice and in a short while I was driving my rig back to NY.

Definitely for many, this is worth this trip.

I'd like to also add that I feel Koons may get their rigs faster, once they ship, because FCA puts them on a car carrier truck directly from Toledo. There's no train involved in getting new Wrangler to Koons Tyson, it's all car carrier truck.

Very helpful! I am in Westchester as well and 4 weeks in on my order so I am starting to get real excited! Congrats on the jeep!

My brother had a great experience at Koons. I am two weeks in on my order. Hoping for a similar great experience.

I ordered from Koons on Friday and had my VIN on Monday. I am hopeful that the process will continue to go smoothly.

In addition to the checklists you see on the forum, I'd, at the risk of pointing out the obvious, know exactly how much to have the bank check drawn out for, and bring it with you, get your Tread Lightly discount at least 30 days prior to taking possession, and don't bring much gear if you've ordered the Dual Top, as there's pretty much only the front seat for another passenger or storage.

While Craig will ask you, remind him to not install a front license plate and holder if you come from a State that doesn't require one. He will issue you temporary VA tags. He tells me my permanent NY tags will automatically arrive in the mail.

Get or bring with you your EZ Pass!

Make sure you get a hard copy manual and the torx wrench (ask Craig to show you where it is.)

Decide ahead of time about whether you want to buy the warranty from FCA via Koons. This, you can not only put on a credit card (unlike the vehicle purchase) but pay for installments to FCA (read: FCA charges you monthly independent of how much of your credit card bill (I hope all) you pay each month.)

If your going with Amtrak and taking your electronics, bring 110V charging, not USB cables alone. The coach seats on Amtrak, at least from my limited experience, only have 110V electric.

Even if you don't finance, they do a credit check--some issue back when the credit reporting agencies lost all that data, the dealer claims.

Personally, NEVER would I pay mere invoice at my local dealer. My time was my own on the train to relax. I'd do this again in a heartbeat. Everybody wins. You get a great price, and Koons makes their fair profit in volume incentive compensation from FCA, to make the deal worth it to them. The dealership, coming from NY, is new, large, well kept, etc.

There's a dealer only a couple of hours from me offering a similar deal to Koons, but I'm sorely tempted to make the longer trip just to enjoy the Amtrak ride.

I've wondered John if Koons gets their rigs faster, more reliably. Their distance from the plant in Toledo is one that's just shorter than would cost justify putting the rigs on trains and then car carrier trucks, so the trip from Toledo to Koons is car carrier only.

Secondly, Koons moves product for FCA like, I am not sure any other FCA dealer, particularly Wranglers. This allows FCA the economies of scale of mass production, where all fixed costs to set up the plant are allocated over a larger number of rigs made. So I've often wondered if Koons has more muscle with FCA than, if not FCA itself for certain, than a lot of other dealers.

I've been to dealers in my area that don't even have a JLU on the lot. I've been to dealers which have a JLU or two, but whose salespeople are clueless (I'm not saying they know less than me--I EXPECT them to know less than me because this is my hobby)...I'm saying clueless.

Oh, and trains--great way to travel, I agree.

I looked at the Amtrak thang, days ago. I can fly Nonstop to DC in a little over an hour vs. 8 hours jumping trains.....and at 1/4 the co$t. Go figure.

...and Koons said they would pick me up at the airport.

Then do the fly. BTW, when you get there, Craig can tell you about some airport expansion in the area that will make the trip for future customers even easier.

I don't know this for certain but it is my understanding yes. Shipping is prioritized by how the transports fill. A dealer (or area for that matter I would imagine) doing larger volume will be able to fill a transport much quicker than areas that don't have the volume. It's economics for FCA on how to maximize bang for their buck shipping. Not to mention that Koons gets their vehicles via truck, not rail, which also expedites things.

I didn't know that Koons is expanding their own airport , airport code "KNS" , whilst Toledo is "JEP" .
